Advance Problems on Reaction Kinetics
#04_2
Consider a second order reversible reaction of decomposition
Q. 1 A → rR, carried out in gas phase. Initially, a test I was conducted
in a batch reactor, introducing pure A, at 300 K. After 10 min, the
pressure was 3 atm. After a sufficiently long time, the pressure
reached 5 atm, remaining constant afterward.
Subsequently, a test was carried out in a closed system with a
piston without friction, but at constant pressure of 1 atm. The final
volume was doubled. Determine the equation of the rate and
calculate both the rate for a conversion of 50% and the initial rate
at such conditions. It is known that k=0.03 L/(mol min).
A 10 min run show that 75% of a liquid reactant is converted by
Q. 2 0.5 order rate. What would be the conversion in half hour?
A reaction A → 4R is carried out in a batch reactor. A is
Q. 3 introduced with 50% (vol.) of inert.
The reaction is irreversible and the reaction order is integer.
However, it is not known if the reaction is first or second order.
Do a test and show the difference. The reaction is carried out at
constant temperature at 27◦C. The final pressure measured was
10 atm, which remained constant. It was observed that after 8
min the total pressure was 8 atm.
A reaction A → 2R+S is carried out in a tubular reactor, and the
Q. 4 reactant A is introduced with 30% of inert. The reaction is
irreversible and of second order. The reactor of 0.2 L is
isothermal, and the reaction occurs at 800K and pressure of
10 atm. It is known that the outflow of the product R is
0.034 mol/s and the conversion was 10%. Calculate the reaction
rate constant. If this reaction would be further carried out in a
batch reactor, calculate the reaction time for the previous
conditions.
A reaction A → R + S is carried out in a batch reactor (constant
Q. 5 volume). The experiment was started with several initial
concentrations and when half of the concentration was reached,
the corresponding time was measured. The following table
gives the values for two different temperatures. Determine the
order of the reaction, the specific rate, and the activation
energy.
After 8 minutes in a batch reactor with CAO = 1 mol/l, conversion
Q. 6 is 80% and after 18 minutes it is 90%. Find the reaction order
and rate equation.
The stoichiometric equation is A → 1.6R. The pressure is
Q. 7 1.2 atm and T is 25 0C. When starting with pure A, volume of
mixture is increased by 50% in 4 minutes. Find the rate
constant.
A gas phase reaction 2A → B occurs at 50 atm and 700 R.
Q. 8 Initially 5 lbmol of A were present. When half of A
disappeared, the rate of disappearance of A is
0.34 lbmol/h.ft3. Find specific rate.
A zero order gas reaction A → rR proceeds in a constant
Q. 9 volume reactor with 20% inerts, and the pressure rises from
1 to 1.3 atm in 2 minutes. When the same reaction proceeds at
constant Pressure of 3 atm and with 40% inerts, what is
the fractional change of volume in 4 minutes.
The first order gas decomposition reaction A → 2.5B is carried
Q. 10 out at 2 atm with 20% inerts and volume increases by 60% in
20 min. In constant volume reactor, find the time required to
reach 8 atm if initial pressure is 5 atm in which 2 atm is due to
the presence of inerts.
Calculate the time to reduce the number of moles by a factor of
Q. 11 10 (NA = NA0/10) in a batch reactor for the reaction A → B
with − rA = kCA, when k = 0.046 min−1.
Calculate the time to reduce the number of moles of A to 1% of
Q. 12 its initial value in a constant volume batch reactor for a reaction
with k = 0.23 min−1.
Consider a 0th order series reaction where 𝐴 → 𝐵 → 𝐶 in batch
Q. 13 reactor. The rate constants are given as 𝑘1 = 0.05 mol/l-min for
𝐴 → 𝐵 and 𝑘2 = 0.02 mol/l-min for 𝐵 → 𝐶. Initially, the
concentration of 𝐴 is 𝐶𝐴0 = 1 mol/L and there is no 𝐵 or 𝐶
present. Find the concentration of ‘𝐴’, ‘𝐵’ and ‘𝐶’ after
10 minutes.
Consider a 2nd order series reaction where 𝐴 → 𝐵 → 𝐶 in batch
Q. 14 reactor. The rate constants are given as 𝑘1 = 0.15 l/mol-min for
𝐴 → 𝐵 and 𝑘2 = 0.1 l/mol-min for 𝐵 → 𝐶. Intially, the
concentration of 𝐴 is 𝐶𝐴0 = 1 mol/L and 𝐶B0 = 0.5 mol/L. Find the
concentration of ‘𝐴’, ‘𝐵’ and ‘𝐶’ after 20 minutes.
