1. Define scientific projects

Scientific Project

As a student, you may be required to develop a science project as a class assignment or to present in a science
fair.

A science project is an educational activity involving experiments or construction of models in one of the
science disciplines. The project may be the construction of a device, demonstration of a principle, or seeing
what would happen if something changed.

To present the science project in class or at a fair, you need a display unit, the exhibit materials, and a written
report.

Questions you may have include:

 What components to display a project and its purpose of a scientific project

This lesson will answer these questions.

Purpose
The purpose of a science project assignment is to get you to investigate some area of interest and then share the
results of your investigation. Through the development of a science project, you learn how scientists work and
make discoveries. Following the scientific method is usually required in a project. The science project may be
displayed in class or it may even be presented at a science fair competition.

Components to present project

Science projects consist of three essential components: the display unit, the display materials, and the written
report. Together, these elements present a complete and detailed examination of an area of interest, a collection
of new knowledge, or the results of a self-initiated experiment.

Display unit
The display unit is usually a three-part board that will stand on a table and allow you to present information about your
project.

Display materials
Materials can be pictures, hardware, or devices that show your project.

Written report
The written report explains components of a laboratory report.

 Title Page = needs to contain the name of the experiment

 Introduction = is more narrowly focused than the abstract. It states the objective of the experiment and
provides the reader with background to the experiment.
 Materials (or Equipment) = can usually be a simple list, but make sure it is accurate.
 Experimental Procedure = Describes the process in chronological order. Using clear paragraph
structure, explain all steps in the order they actually happened, not as they were supposed to happen.
 Results = are usually dominated by calculations, tables and figures; however, you still need to state all
significant results
 Discussion = is the most important part of your report, because here, you show that you understand the
experiment beyond the simple level of completing it.
 Conclusion = can be very short in most undergraduate laboratories. Simply state what you know now
for sure, as a result of the lab
 References = include your lab manual and any outside reading you have done.

Summary
A science project is an educational activity involving experiments or construction of models in one of the
science disciplines. The project may be the construction of a device, demonstration of a principle, or seeing
what would happen if something changed.

To present the science project in class or at a fair, you need a display unit, the exhibit materials, and a written
