Chapter 1 About This Guide

Overview

In This Module

Inovonics Wireless Corporation is a US-based company that has developed a range of Spread Spectrum RF receivers and transmitters that have applications within the security market, where wireless communications is desired. There are several transmitter models available such as the hand held push button types, wireless PIRs or wired input types, which can be connected to sensors such as PIRs or any other type of input device. The non-hand held transmitters are installed around an area, typically up to 0.5 miles (or further using repeater modules) from the receiver. Each transmitter contains a Lithium battery, with a life under normal conditions stated as being as much as five years (depending on the type of device and frequency of use). There is only one-way communication from the transmitter to the receiver, so no backward commands are supported, and no output control is possible. All the transmitters are input type devices. All Frequency Agile (FA) products operate in the 902-928 MHz band for use in North America. The EchoStream (ES) series has two models, the EE4000 and the EN4000. The EN4000 is used in North America and operates in the 902-928 MHz band. The EE4000 is used in Australia (915-928 MHz), New Zealand (921-928 MHz), and Europe (868-870 MHz). NOTE The EE4000 and the EN4000 are almost identical in terms of configuration. The products will be referred to as EE/ ES/EN4000 when the configuration is identical. A distinction between the two will be made when configuration differs. There are several different receiver types that are used to accept signals from the transmitters. Pacom field controllers currently support the FA400. This is a small self-contained box that processes the RF signalling from the transmitters, and maintains status information and integrity checking to

ensure the transmitters are still operating. Support for the interface will be limited to the Pacom 1057, 1058 and Witness field controllers. The field controller communicates with the FA400 receiver unit via a Pacom 1068 which is connected to the RS485 device line. The 1068 auto-detects the Inovonics receiver and automatically configures itself within in the system (see Section 3.1. FA400 Receiver). The field controller communicates with the EE/ES/EN4000 receiver directly via an RS232 connection. All field controller ports are configurable for this protocol (see Section 3.2. EE/ES/ EN4000 EchoStream Receiver). Further information on Inovonics can be found at www.inovonicswireless.com. The field controller will process status messages from the receiver that are sent as soon as an event occurs. There are several alarm messages that will be received by the field controller from the receiver. The messages of most interest are the status message relating to wireless devices: Alarm status - each Transmitter (Tx) has one alarm input Battery status of the Lithium battery Tamper status - each Tx has one tamper input Offline status if the Receiver (Rx) stops hearing the Tx. The field controller will process these messages internally and, based on the configuration, will report the appropriate alarms. This information is also used to display the status of the transmitters on a 1062 keypad. Transmitter status messages from the receiver will be de-coded as follows, provided the alarm point is configured in the field controller. Each bit is checked for current status and, if changed, will be processed. If the Alarm bit is active, it will report an External Normal alarm for this point If the Tamper bit is active, it will report an Internal Tamper alarm for device type Wireless Tx with the alarm input number for that transmitter. If the Offline bit is set, it will reset the Offline Supervise Window timer for this point. If this timer increments to the Supervise Window time then a Trouble condition alarm will be generated. If the Battery Low bit is set, it will report an Internal Battery Low alarm for device type Wireless Transmitter Tx Number is same as alarm number. The FA400 receiver will send a poll to the Pacom 1068 every 60 seconds. The 1068 will expect a poll from the receiver within 70 seconds of the previous poll and will send an acknowledgement response upon receipt. The 1068 will mark the receiver as offline if a poll has not been received within this time. If the receiver does not receive a response to a poll, it will go into fast poll mode and will poll the 1068 many times a second. If the 1068 detects a rapid succession of polls it will assume that the FA400 is not receiving the poll responses and the receiver will be marked as offline. Polling is, however, available with the EE/ES/EN4000, so the field controller will poll the receiver to determine if it has gone offline. The poll time-out is calculated as five times the poll timer value. If after this time there is no response from the receiver, the field controller will report an Offline Wireless Receiver message to the GMS. When the receiver communications is re-established, an Online Wireless Receiver message will be reported, and the receiver number will match the Logical number that it is configured in the Port Parameters (refer to Section 4.2 EE/ES/EN4000 Receiver Configuration).

3.1. FA400 Receiver

3.1.1. Installation
The field controller communicates with the FA400 receiver unit via a Pacom 1068. The following procedure describes how to setup an FA400 receiver and a 1068. 1. Assemble the Inovonics Receiver and the 1068 as required. 2. Set a unique address for the 1068 using the address links. 3. Set LNK5 to INV on the 1068 to enable Inovonics mode. 4. If the 1068 module is the end device on the RS485 line, use solder to short LK1. 5. Connect OUT from the FA400 Receiver to IN2 on the 1068. 6. Connect GND from the FA400 Receiver to GND on the 1068. 7. Connect a Tamper Switch between IN1 and GND on the 1068. If a tamper switch is not used, connect IN1 directly to GND. 8. Connect Power for the receiver via the output relay of the 1068. Ensure the Relay O/P Link is set between Normally Closed and Common. The 1068 will cycle power to the receiver if comms are lost and will attempt to reconnect. 9. The 1068 will automatically detect that it is connected to a FA400 and auto configure itself. NOTE When the 1068 is powered up the red Rx LED 2 will light while it attempts to detect the receiver. The LED will remain lit while the 1068 attempts to detect the receiver for a period 10 seconds. If a receiver has not been detected within this time the 1068 will assume its normal I/O mode of operation.

3.1.2. LED Operation on Inovonics FA400 Receiver

There are three LEDs on the FA400 PCB, the Communications LED, Decode LED, and the Valid Decode LED. Table 1 reflects the operation of these LEDs. Immediately after power is applied to the FA400, the Communications LED should be lit almost steadily while the Decode and Valid Decode LED's will remain off. During this time the FA400 is operating in offline mode. While offline, the Pacom 1068 will be polled in a fast poll mode (many polls a second) until it receives a response. After a valid response is received from the 1068, the FA400 will enter a slow poll mode, with a poll every 60 seconds. At this time, the Decode LED will start blinking steadily. The FA400 will now accept transmissions from a transmitter. If the 1068 fails to respond to polls from the FA400 while in slow poll mode, the receiver will return to fast poll mode. Because the polls are up to 60 seconds apart, it could take up to that time before the receiver returns to the fast poll mode after communications to the 1068 is disrupted. Whenever the FA400 receives transmissions from a transmitter, the Decode LED will flash at a brighter intensity. The Decode LED indicates the reception of any Inovonics transmitter signal regardless of the IDH (Application ID) programmed into the transmitter. The Valid Decode LED will not light unless a transmission is received from a transmitter with an IDH that matches the receiver's. When a valid transmitter message is received, the Decode, Valid Decode, and Communications LED's on the FA400 will all flash to indicate that the signal was received and passed to the 1068. Chapter 3 Installation

3.1.3. Supervision Window vs. Check In Time

There are essentially two main timers in the Inovonics Wireless system. Check In Time: Programmed into the transmitter. Determines how often the transmitter sends its check in message to the Inovonics receiver. Default Check In Time for FA transmitters is five minutes. Supervision Window: Programmed in the RTU. It indicates the amount of time that a transmitter must be heard from before being declared inactive. This will be the worst case check-in time as there are no individual timers. All transmitters may have different check-in times, so to avoid having any go offline, this time must be set greater than the value of the longest transmitter check-in time. The Supervision Window is typically in several multiples of the Check In Time and the recommended Supervision Window is between two and four hours.

3.2. EE/ES/EN4000 EchoStream Receiver

The EE/ES/EN4000 Receiver operates in the 902-928MHz band. It is contained in a housing and has two antennas mounted inside the housing. A separate connection point and cable is supplied in this receiver to program the transmitters (refer to Inovonics documentation). The connection between the field controller and the Receiver is RS232 using the connection detailed below: Vs and GND are to be connected if the RTU will provide power to the EE/ES/EN4000. The port will be configured in the normal way using the GMS Port Parameters option (refer to Section 4.2 EE/ ES/EN4000 Receiver Configuration). Table 2: RS232 Connections from Receiver to Field Controller (RTU) Ports Vs GND Tx Rx Pin 1 Pin 5 Pin 3 Pin 2 Pin 25 Pin 7 Pin 2 Pin 3

NOTE On any RTU (excluding 1058A), the port connected to the EE/ES/EN4000 must be physically setup as a RS232 port for using links on the RTU PCB. For more information about port configuration using links, refer to the Hardware Installation Guide.

Table 1: Supervision Window [Inovonics FA400] This is the amount of time (in minutes) in which a transmitter has to report to the RTU before the RTU declares the transmitter offline. This should be the worst case check in time, as there are no individual timers. All transmitters may have different check in times, so to avoid having any go offline, this time must be set to the value of the longest check in time. The ID of the Inovonics receiver connected to Pacom 1068 device. This ID will be stored in the 1068, and only messages from the device with the specified ID will be accepted.

4.1.2. Programming Via Keypad

If there is more than one receiver being used, it may be necessary to program the receiver with a different IDH to filter out unwanted transmitter messages. The default IDH is 0. NOTE Only FA400 receivers can be programmed via a keypad. As the receiver cannot poll the transmitters, the field controller must rely on the periodic reports from the transmitters to keep them marked as online. For each transmitter configured, the field controller will keep a separate timer running in the background. Currently the field controller will use a global parameter, Supervision Window, to set the duration of these timers. The recommended value for the Supervision Window is four hours. This time must be set as several multiples greater than the longest check-in time programmed into the transmitters. Typically the ratio of Check In Time:Supervision Window is 30:1. To program registers using a 1061, proceed as follows: 1. Ensure that the system is in Day Mode, press Log On. 2. Enter the Engineering User ID and/or PIN and press ENT. 3. Press MENU, and select if alarms and outputs will be reported while in Engineering Mode. 4. Select CONFIG, select OTHER, followed by INOVONIC. 5. FA400 Receiver). 8. Enter the IDH that is to be programmed into the receiver and press ENT. 9. If the Port # and Address have been entered correctly and the receiver is found, the keypad will display Receiver found, IDH Programmed - otherwise the 1062 will display No 400 Receiver Found. 10.Repeat this procedure to program more receivers. NOTE Once the new parameters have been sent, the receiver may take up to one minute to lock onto the IDH.

4.2. EE/ES/EN4000 Receiver Configuration

The Inovonics EE/ES/EN4000 Receiver is connected via RS232 to the field controller. The following procedure shows how to setup the Port Parameters for the EE/ES/EN4000. 1. From the GMS desktop click the Hardware Parameters icon and select RTU Parameters from the menu. 2. Type the RTU number in the text box next to the RTU No. button and click RTU No. The options available for that RTU will be displayed in the Options box. 3. Select Port Parameters and click OK. The Port Parameters window will be displayed. 4. Single click on the port the EE/ES/EN4000 is connected to. The Parameters dialog will be displayed. 5. From the Protocol drop-down menu, select Inovonics, and the values on the Parameters dialog will change, as shown in the figure below. 6. Enter the appropriate values in the General Parameters section, click Download, then Close. The Parameters are described in Table 2:

13

Table 2: Supervision Window Check-in time (in minutes) between transmitter and receiver. This will be the worst case check-in time as there are no individual timers. All transmitters may have different check-in times, so to avoid having any go offline, this time must be set greater than the value of the longest transmitter check-in time. If this value is set too low, a Trouble Alarm will be generated for all the transmitters. Recommended Value is 25. Time between polls if no messages status messages are received from the Receiver. Recommended Value is 15. The actual logical number that will be reported in the Online and Offline messages to GMS. The amount of time waited without comms before the Serial Communications Chip (SCC) will be reset. Recommended Value is 5. This is the IDH number. The receiver will filter out any transmissions received from transmitters that do not have this IDH programmed (0-255).

When you select this, the screen will be displayed as shown in the figure below. 5. The IDM and IDL values are not required to be programmed. 6. Enter the No. of Report Points that will be reported. This value is the number of consecutively numbered transmitters including the first. For example, if the number of report points is 10, then the transmitters that will be configured will be from 20 to 29. Note that the only Point Type available is Input. 7. Enter the Report Point Start Address. This value is the Input Number that will be applied to the first transmitter. The remainder of the transmitters configured will be numbered consecutively starting form this number. The Input Number is the unique number of the input (1-256) as it will be identified within this site (field controller). Once the device is configured in the hardware map, it will be processed like any other input point configured in the system. All the options for that input point that are available in the Input configuration page also apply, such as vocab descriptions, isolation, etc. There are separate alarm messages that will be reported for all other conditions than the alarm. These messages will be reported as either Internal Alarms and Restores with a new device type, or as External Alarm and Restores. A separate status block of memory will be kept for these devices so they can be displayed on the GMS. For more information on using the Inputs to activate Outputs and trigger macros etc. refer to the Field Controller Configuration Guide.
