GPRS
• GPRS stands for General Packet Radio Service.

• It is the modified version of GSM architecture.

• GSM only support voice data services.
• GPRS is nothing but the GSM system use it ,modify it and upgrade it and add some new

components.

• GPRS is a packet switched data mechanism, that can carry data packets.

• In GSM architecture, only voice signals can be transported, so being an enhanced version
GPRS is able to transmit voice as well as data packets.

• GPRS has the ability to offer data speeds of 14.4kbps to 171.2kbps, which allow for 2
comfortable internet access.
GPRS
• GPRS uses the GSM architecture for voice.
• GPRS provide voice call, data access and internet access service.

• GSM to GPRS added new nodes are called GPRS support nodes [GSN].

• GSN are responsible for the delivery and routing of data packets from mobile
stations.

• There are two types of support nodes

• SGSN [Serving GSN]
• GGSN [Gateway GSN]

GPRS Base Station Subsystem
• Each BSC requires the installation of Packet Control Units (PCUs) and a software
upgrade.
• PCU forward data BSC to SGSN.
• PCU uses FRI interface to forward data packets.

GPRS system architecture
• GPRS Support Nodes
• GPRS support nodes are of two types:

1. Serving GPRS Support Node (SGSN)

• It is responsible for the following tasks:

• Authenticate user.

• Registration of new mobile in network.

• Data compression
• In the data compression necessary data is taken and unnecessary data removed and 6
after forward to GGSN.

2. Gateway GPRS Support Node (GGSN)

• It is responsible for the following tasks:

• It acting as interface or as router.

• Router route the path.
• Routing algorithm, Routing table and Routing information to provide a path
for mobile user.
• Data network is connected to GGSN through all over network.
• Routing to deliver data or information using packet data network.
