Plastic becomes problem when we use it more than we need. According to the
UN Environment Program (UNEP), 300 million tons of plastic is produced every
year. National Geographic magazine states that more than 40 percent of plastic is
used just once and then thrown away. Bins bags, food packaging, shopping bags,
straws, and cups are some of the plastic products we use daily.
Plastic is not destroyed by natural processes. When plastic is thrown away carelessly, it will make its
way to rivers and oceans. Fish and other species may eat it. Some 700 species of marine animals have
been reported to have eaten or become entangled in plastic. By 2050, every seabird species on the planet
will be eating plastic. Soon or later, it is possible that plastic is into our food supply.
However, we can make a big difference. When we get rid of plastic, we can recycle and reuse it.
Experts suggest throwing plastic away correctly. They recommend a plastic recycling program. Old bottles
and other plastic are collected, broken down, and used to make new products. By putting a new value on
plastic, industry can save money. Moreover, it becomes one reason to clean up the environment.
