Lab Title: To build a molecular model of a biopolymer from basic repeating peptide units

Objective:
1. Understand the fundamental concepts of biopolymers and their structural characteristics.
2. Grasp the basics of peptide bond formation and the significance of peptide units in biopolymers.
3. Develop proficiency in constructing molecular models and visualizing the three-dimensional
structure of biopolymers using our student molecular model kit.
4. Analyze how the sequence of peptide units influences the overall structure of a biopolymer.
5. Evaluate the properties of different biopolymers based on their molecular structures.
Description:
A brief overview of biopolymers, with a focus on peptides as our primary example. Pay close
attention to the structure of peptides, especially the peptide bond and how peptide units are formed
through amino acid condensation reactions. A peptide bond is an amide type
of covalent chemical bond linking two consecutive alpha-amino acids from C1 (carbon number
one) of one alpha-amino acid and N2 (nitrogen number two) of another, along
a peptide or protein chain
Materials:

• Each group will receive a student molecular model kit (MMS-008).

Lab Task

1 Split into small groups.

2 Grab your molecular model kits
3 Keep the instruction manual nearby.
4 Choose elements from the kit to kickstart your peptide chain.
5 Build a simple dipeptide with the chosen amino acids.
6 Pay attention to the bond angles and overall geometry of the peptide bond.
7 Expand your dipeptide by adding more amino acids to create a short peptide chain.
8 Consider how the sequence of amino acids impacts the properties and functions of the
resulting biopolymer.
9 Keep going by adding more peptide units to your chains, forming longer biopolymer
structures.
10 Make sure to maintain proper bond angles and geometry to reflect the natural conformation
of the biopolymer.
11 Once you've constructed your biopolymer models, let's have a chat about what you've
observed.
12 Compare and contrast the structures of different biopolymers based on their amino acid
sequences.
13 Discuss how these structural differences affect the properties and functions of biopolymers
in living organisms.

Conclusion
In this lab, your objective was to construct a molecular model of a peptide using basic repeating
units, aiming to gain insights into its structure and properties. By paying close attention to bond
angles and sequence arrangements, the goal was to understand how these factors influence the
characteristics of peptides as biomaterials.

• Lab Title: To build a model of CHITSON (Natural bio-material) from basic repeating
units.

• Objective:

1 To understand the structure and properties of chitosan (CHITSON) as a bio-material.

2 To learn how to construct molecular models of chitosan using basic repeating units.
3 To explore the relationship between the structure of chitosan and its potential applications
in biomaterials science.
4 To analyze the structural features of chitosan models and correlate them with its
biocompatibility and functional properties.
Description:
An overview of chitosan as a bio-material. Discuss its origin, chemical structure, properties, and
various applications in biomaterials research and industry. Chitosan is a sugar that comes from the
outer skeleton of shellfish, including crab, lobster, and shrimp. It's used as medicine and in drug
manufacturing.
Materials:

• Each group will receive a student molecular model kit (MMS-008).

• Lab Task:

1. Split into small groups.

2. Grab your model kits or materials for manual modeling.
3. Keep the instructional materials or guidelines on chitosan structure nearby.
4. Choose elements from the kit or materials to begin constructing your chitosan model.
5. Assemble a basic chitosan unit using the chosen components.
6. Pay careful attention to the arrangement of bonds and the overall geometry of the chitosan unit.
7. Extend your chitosan model by adding more units to create a short chitosan chain.
8. Reflect on how the sequence of chitosan units influences the properties and functionalities of
the resulting biomaterial.
9. Continue building your chitosan structure by incorporating additional units, forming longer
chains or more complex structures.
10. Ensure that the bond angles and geometry are accurately maintained to represent the natural
conformation of chitosan.
11. After constructing your chitosan models, gather to discuss your observations and findings.
12. Compare and contrast the structures of different chitosan models based on their arrangement
of units.
13. Explore how these structural variations impact the properties and functionalities of chitosan as
