Teen Scene: Why Curfews Should be Enforced

We did our review on the article titled “Why Curfews Should Be Enforced” written by Jenna
Welsh. This article is sourced from Times Columnist. The article issued that many teenagers
view adolescence as a time to experience greater independence in some areas of their lives and
break away from their parents. The author agrees that curfews should be enforced towards the
teenagers. The tone used by the author was objective. The author fully supports the idea of
importance of curfews.

Teenagers may not be aware of all the benefits of curfews. First of all, teenagers are
more likely to stay out of trouble when they abide by curfews. It is probable that youngsters
will get involved in criminal or high-risk activity when their parents are not present to supervise
them. Next, curfews enable teenagers to build management and help them become used to
creating and adhering to a regular schedule. Effective time management is helpful in many
contexts, such as workplace and education. Lastly, teenagers who are subjected to curfews are
also able to go to bed at a reasonable hour. A restful night sleep will result in increased attention
and focus at school. The teenagers’ grades might even improve. In addition, we discover that
the article is well-written for the broad issue that has always been discussed in society. The
author’s choice of language is understandable as the writing is easy to comprehend. Lastly, we
concur with every point that the author states. Along with having a clear thesis statement, topic
sentences and supporting details, the article is also well-organized. Nevertheless, the reader
cannot be convinced by the author’s content since the author is merely expressing her opinion
about whether curfews for teenagers should be enforced or not. Since the author did not provide
any strong evidence to back up the main ideas, the article is not well-supported.

In our opinion, we agree that curfews should be enforced for teenagers. As written on
the article, curfews have many advantages for teenagers. The first one is it could ensure
teenager’s safety. Children, especially teenagers, are prone to crimes late at night. Teen curfews
offer a sense of security and protection and ensure that children and teenagers are in their safety
homes. A study conducted on 54 US cities with 180,000 or more residents by researchers at
the University of California, Berkeley, suggests that curfew laws reduce youth arrests by 10%
(Culey, 2011). Other than that, setting a curfew allows teenagers to establish a regular bedtime
routine and get better sleep. According to the CDC, adolescents between the ages of 13 and 18
need 8 to 10 hours of sleep per night. Teenagers who don’t get enough sleep experience worse

mental and physical health, as well as poorer academic performance. In a national sample, 7
out of 10 high school students didn’t sleep enough during the week (Newport Academy, 2023).
In fine, curfews can increase a teenager’s responsibility. The next step of being a teenager is
becoming an adult. A curfew helps teenagers learn to be responsible about their time and the
places they visit and prepares them to shoulder more responsibility as they grow (Kankani,
2023).

The discussion on why curfews should be enforced is a great way in developing the
discipline and development of today's youth. There are many disadvantages when parents do
not care about their children, especially teenagers who cannot think maturely. In this context,
they think more about pleasure than their importance for their future. In winding up, we agree
that curfews should be enforced as it could ensure teen safety, improve sleep, and increase teen
responsibility.
