What is a computer?
A computer refers to an electronic device that accepts data and instructions, performs logical
and mathematical operations, and generates the outputs of the processing. The outputs or results
are the information that we need.

Computers Are Programmable

- Respond to instructions in the form of programs

- Programs are written in order to make computers behave in specific ways i.e. word processor,
systems control

- Programs are stored in the Computer memory

How computers process information
the ‘Black Box’ model

● Input: Entering data or instructions into the computer.

● Processing: Performing calculations, manipulating data, and executing instructions.
● Output: Displaying results or transmitting data to users or other devices.
● Storage: Saving data and programs for future use.
Computers and Numbers
- Computers use the binary number system,
which represents data using only two digits: 0
and 1.

- Binary digits (bits) are the basic units of data

storage and processing in computers.

Early computer systems had mechanical switches

that turned on to represent 1, and turned off to
represent 0.

Significance of Computers in Daily Life

- Communication
- Facilitates communication through email, social media, and messaging apps.
- Education
- Provides access to vast amounts of educational resources and online learning platforms.
- Work
- Enables automation, data analysis, and productivity tools in various industries.
- Entertainment
- Offers gaming, streaming services, and digital content creation tools
Do’s and Don'ts

DO DON’T
● give the computer room to breathe ● block air vents
● keep it in a dry place ● eat or drink while using the computer
● dust free ● expose to extremes of temperature
● shut down properly ● just switch off
● keep removable storage away from ● move while the computer is in
the screen operation
