Tutorial – 4
(SIL calculation, YBus and Loadflow studies)

1. A 3-ph, 60 Hz, 500 kV transmission line is 300 km long. The line inductance is
0.97 mH/km/ph and its capacitance is 0.0115 µF/km/ph. Assume a lossless line.
(i) Determine the phase constant, surge impedance, velocity of propogation and
wavelength of the line.
(ii) If the receiving end has 800 MW, 0.8pf lag rated load at 500 kV, then
determine the sending end quantities and voltage regulation.

2. Find the bus admittance matrix for the network shown in Fig. 1, the indicated
values are corresponding pu impedances. Validate the same using singular
transformation method.

3. For the power system network shown in Fig. 2, the voltage of bus 1 is 1.05 pu.
Taking 100 MVA base and neglecting the line susceptances,
(i) Use the Gauss-Seidel Method to obtain the load flow solution for 2
iterations, accuracy up to 4 decimal places.
(ii) If the final solution is obtained after 10 iterations with 𝑉2 =
0.98183∠−3.50350 𝑝𝑢 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑉3 = 1.00125∠−2.86240 𝑝𝑢, obtain the
slack bus parameters and line flows.

4. Assuming a flat voltage profile, calculate the load flows for 2 iterations using
the GS method. The powers are indicated in pu values.
5. Suppose in Fig. 2, the bus 2 is a pv bus with |𝑉2 | = 1.04 𝑝𝑢 and P2 =0.5 pu, then
solve the load flows for 1 iteration.
6. Suppose if Prob. 5, the reactive power limits are defined by 0.25 ≤ 𝑄2 ≤ 1, then
check if any violations happen. If so, then solve the load flow with appropriate
action for 1 iteration.

7. For the network shown in Fig. 4, Use NR- method to find the load flow solution
after 3 iterations. Also, find the slack bus parameters.
