The Needfor Practical Exposureinthe Education System
Life is not only about getting good marks academically instead gaining knowledge is what
matters. Learning how to behave, balancing everything like self-control, emotions, dealing with
people and many more are some qualities that make an individual unique.
Practical exposure is something where you can interact with whatever you are
learning theoretically. You will be able to gain knowledge that you don't have to memorize.
The need for practical exposure in our education system will help the students to know their field
of interest from a very early age.
In this article, we will explain the evolution of the education system, student unemployment, the
cause of it, the need for practical exposure, and how we can implement it.
Unlike the modern education system, the ancient education system was able to provide practical
exposure. The system was based more on providing moral values and discipline for all life-
related problems. This system also provides knowledge in every field, such as politics, archery,
art, architecture, etc. Students then were not forced to mug up the things for better job
placement! Students were more knowledgeable.
Here are the three aspects why the ancient system was better than the modern system :
Rising unemployment
Our modern education has failed to make a person a better individual who is satisfied and
happy in life.
“Education without values, as useful as it is, seems rather to make a man a more clever devil.”
~C.S Lewis.
The news is coming that students from prestigious colleges in India are unable to get
placements. Very popular news that in the IIT Bombay campus, 36% of students haven’t got
placement yet! As we can see even getting into colleges like IIT is not enough to make one
individual successful! So here can we state that lack of practical exposure is one of the causes?
Here is a table that shows how more education leads to more unemployment:
Qualification Unemployement %
Amoung graduates 29%
Among people with secondary or higher education 18.4%
Among literates 3.4%
Exposure to the reality of life plays a crucial role in predicting your success. The fact is
that today’s youth is educated but not knowledgeable. The problem lies in mindset. Our
generation thinks that having a good degree and a job is all that is required in life. But
they don’t prioritize that building up a skill is what is needed. They don't realize that a person
with a trained skill is more effective than someone with merely a degree.
We have many examples where individuals haven’t gone to any colleges or got any
degree and yet they are successful.
1. Thomas Edison who was a genius, an American inventor, and a businessman, dropped
out of school at the age of 12.
2. Albert Einstein, as we all know, one of the great physicists of all time, also dropped out
of high school at the age of 15, but later took the admission and hadn’t got the degree.
3. Richard Branson, a British business magnate, also failed school.
Looking at the above example, it can be stated that these people knew their field of interest and
focused on their goal by gaining knowledge not a degree!
And talking about practical exposure, though our generation is getting distracted by lots of
unnecessary things like wasting time on smartphones, as a responsible adult we must ensure to
teach our kids morality and values first. Schools and colleges should free students to take the
subjects they are interested in and not create pressure by categorizing good and bad subjects.
Students mustn’t be judged based on their academic marks rather schools and colleges should
introduce new courses that should be based on developing unique skills. We should encourage
students to choose the field they are interested in and normalize things that fields other than
doctors and engineers can also guarantee success. Students should be given awareness about the
usefulness of reading books. It’s a very shameful thing that the book market is decreasing
rapidly and the youth is finding it futile to read books. And also many students in India find it
difficult to take a timeout for reading, due to heavy study pressure! Many students are also
interested in the sports line, so schools and colleges should also ensure to develop their sports
section.
Conclusion
Just like the five fingers in our hand which are not similar in shape and size but obviously, all are
useful, just like that every student is unique and is useful for this world. There is a lot of peer
pressure that students face while choosing their career options, more than a student and his
family, the people of the society decide which career options are good for the student, a very
strange thing, isn’t it? Every student should realize its true essence then only they can be
successful.
