Donir Selimaj ENGLISH ESSAY: Fahrenheit 451 3M04

2. Read the definition of a hero below. Which character(s)

has/have all or some of the qualities of a hero? Explore how
Bradbury challenges the concept of heroism in his novel.

Bradbury highlights different characters who have qualities of a

hero. For example, there are Beatty and Montag. Montag is a
good hero, and he rebels against the censorship and the
dictatorship by burning many books. Beatty is a bad hero, who
wants to impose his vision of world and he obliges the people to
follow his rules. Faber helps Montag to rebel against this
oppressive society and he assists Montage throughout story. The
author explores the heroism by putting suspense and tensions
between the two characters.

Firstly, Montag is under Beatty’s orders, it’s showed on the p. 9

“it was a pleasure to burn” but gradually he begins to rebel
against the Beatty by stealing books for example he steals a
Bible, because in this dystopian society the books are forbidden
of society, and they must be burned and mainly the Bible. This
situation happens after that they burn the house of an old woman
because she had got many books. This woman decides to
commit suicide p. 54 “The woman […] the railing”. After this
tragic incident, Montag steals the Bible and hides it at home and
is thinking about what he is going to do, before showing it to
Mildred. This passage shows that is difficult for him to take a
position in the beginning of the story and the fact that a woman
commits a suicide, pushes him to question himself and the
society in which Montag lives. Despite his questioning, this
important passage underlines the beginning of Montag’s revolt.

Secondly, Beatty is the dictator who wants to impose his

perception of the world. He is perceived as the bad hero of the
story. The antagonist insists to forbid the books by replacing
with technology whose power will have a power of destruction
and negatives consequences on other characters, like Mildred
who is indoctrinated by technology, it is showed on the p. 65
“Will you turn […] that’s my family”. Beatty imposes his
heroism by controlling all the doings and gestures of characters.
In a certain way these people are the puppets that Beatty can
manipulate as he wishes. He breaks all the identities of
individuals and brainwashes them. The Machiavellian character
explains to Montag that we can have a peace of mind by
avoiding the books as it writes on the p. 77 “They were […]
that’s me”. However, the situation remains critical because the
practice of avoiding books does not keep society peaceful.

Finally, one of the other important characters is Faber. He helps

Montag in his adventure and his fight against the oppression by
following him in Montag’s quest as a mentor as for example it

was mentioned on the p. 150 “Montag, can’t you run, get away”,
and on the p. 153 “Montag, get out of there!”. Another quality
can be cited, Faber thinks all the time instead of acting right
away, contrary to Montag, who is more spontaneous. Faber, with
Montag, is one of the rare characters who understand the
catastrophe which happens in this society and the consequences
that this can cause, that is why Faber want to help Montag
destroy this dystopia.

In conclusion, the author Bradbury shows the concept of

heroism by using different characters like Montag, Faber and
Beatty. Montag is the good hero, who wants to destroy the bad
society with lots of helps, as for example with Faber’s help.
Faber is Montag’s assistant; he helps him to fight Beatty, and
he’s the path of prudence contrary to Montag who is the strict
opposite. At last, Beatty is the bad hero, and he imposes his rules
and seats up many objectives to indoctrinate the people and
forbid all the books.
