CHAPTER 1
PREDICATES AND QUANTIFIERS
RULES OF INFERENCE

1. In (a) – (e), suppose the variable 𝑥 represents people, and

𝐹(𝑥): 𝑥 is friendly, 𝑇(𝑥): 𝑥 is tall, 𝐴(𝑥): 𝑥 is angry.

Write the statement using these predicates and any needed quantifiers.
a) Some people are not angry.
b) All tall people are friendly.
c) No friendly people are angry.
d) Some tall angry people are friendly.
e) If a person is friendly, then that person is not angry.

2. Translate the following into symbolic form:

a) Everybody likes him
b) Somebody cried out for help and called the police
c) Nobody can ignore her

3. Consider the following hypotheses:

“It is not snowy today and it is hotter than yesterday.”

“We will go skiing only if it is snowy.”
“If we do not go skiing, then we will go for a cable car ride.”
“If we take a cable car ride, then we will reach downhill by midnight.”

By using the rule of inference and stating justification for each step, establish the valid argument for
the conclusion: We will reach downhill by midnight.

4. Consider the following hypotheses:

“Today is not Monday or Alicia has her first test.”

“Alicia does not have her first test or she does not study.”
“Today is Monday or Alicia does not study.”

By using the rule of inference and stating justification for each step, establish the valid argument for
the conclusion: Alicia does not study.
