“THE INFLUENCE OF K-POP TOWARDS THE ACADEMIC

PERFORMANCE AMONG GRADE 10 STUDENTS IN LALA NATIONAL HIGH

SCHOOL“

Chapter 1
Background of the study

Introduction

The South Korean influence that is highly observable in the Philippines today
bears both negative and positive effects. Positive in a way that it strengthens the ties
between South Korea and the Philippines because Filipinos tend to somehow lessen being
influenced by Western Countries and instead appreciate their fellow Asian’s culture.
However, as mentioned, it can be viewed negatively for the reason that Filipinos are
becoming overly-driven to the Korean culture resulting to the loss of one’s identity and
negligence of patriotism for one’s own country. Another negative side of the influx of
South Korean influence is the K-pop or the Korean music being a threat to the OPM or
Original Pilipino Music. K-pop, being more preferred by youth today, became the
competitor of OPM in terms of album and concert ticket sales, fan-base events,
merchandise purchasing, and worst, in terms of popularity.

There are more than 35 million K-pop fans around the world; and thousands out
of this Million can be found in Asia, particularly, Philippines. Since 2009, which is
considered to be the Birth year of K-pop in the country, the population of Filipinos that
are hooked with Korean music Just kept on growing. According to a research paper done
by Arriola (2013) entitled, “Korean Pop Invasion in the Philippines: a Threat to OPM?,”
Todd Joseph Miles Holden, a social scientist and Philosopher, defined K-pop as a genre
of music and a subculture at the same time that originated In South Korea which
comprises a wide spectrum of both musical and visual elements. But it is Not just K-pop
that took over the hearts of many Filipinos, not to forget the Korean dramas as well.

With the rising popularity of the Hallyu Wave, numerous Korean trends have
been taking over the world, specifically Korean Dramas. While K-pop can have many
positive influences, such as promoting diversity and teaching important values, it can also
have negative influences, such as perpetuating harmful stereotypes and contributing to
obsessive fan culture. With its continual movement, it is important to investigate and
understand how this phenomenon affects the Filipino people. This study aims to
understand the ongoing popularity of K-pop in the Philippines and how it affects and
influences various aspects of Filipino lives. As Filipinos became fans of Korean dramas
and Korean music, most were influenced by Korean idols to buy foods and products that
they eat or their favorites. That is how devoted or fanatic a Filipino can be to Korean
idols, they can buy and eat everything because their idols also consume it.
To answer the research questions and achieve the research objectives, a
phenomenological approach was taken to help describe this phenomenon.
A total of 60 respondents, male and female, ages 15 to 18 will be questioned. To
analyze the data, a descriptive survey will be conducted online with reflexivity in mind,
was employed to look for recurring theme.

Emotional

No one is old enough for k-pop and k-drama and the love of Filipinos for Hallyu
Culture will surely never end. No matter what happens, Filipinos will always be one of
the ultimate K-Pop Hallyu fans in the world.
As what is always says, Filipinos are not only into k-dramas and k-pop but they
are also into Korean culture, they are acting to have interest in culture, from their work
and from their beliefs. Filipinos nowadays stand learning that and it seems they are
accepting it, although we know that we Filipinos are emotional and if we see Korean
culture are also emotional too, we can relate to each other, so there’s a reason to study
and learn it. It is okay to love their culture, but we should love also our own culture, it’s
because nowadays we don’t appreciate our own culture because of K-Pop influences.

Listening to K-pop music has been found to have a significant impact on students'
academic performance. Studies have shown that listening to pleasant music, such as K-
pop, while studying can help students overcome stress, improve their mood, and increase
their focus and efficiency in studying. However, it is important to note that the impact of
K-pop music on academic performance may vary depending on individual preferences
and the level of distraction caused by the music .
Additionally, the influence of K-pop culture on students' behavior and their preference
for K-pop over local culture has been observed, which may indirectly affect their
academic performance. Furthermore, research has explored the self-control of adolescent
K-pop fans and found that while K-pop fandom can help students control their behavior,
there is still room for improvement in terms of self-control skills . Overall, while listening
to K-pop music may have some impact on students' academic performance, it is
important to consider individual differences and the potential influence of K-pop culture
on student's behavior.

Psychological

The emotional attachment built between the fans and the idols makes the fans feel
like they are in a particular relationship, even when they do not directly interact through
the media. However, the parasocial relationship will still continuously happen even if the
idols do not present in the media. The case that started as a parasocial interaction might
continue to become a parasocial relationship. Nevertheless, an intense parasocial
relationship could happen even without creating a parasocial interaction in the first place
(Hartmann 2016).
The K-Pop system shapes the idol to adjust themselves to the narration and the
characteristics that fit their public persona (Hwang 2018). Hwang further stated that the
K-Pop system involves the media at an extreme level and depends on the idol who has
never removed their persona to do their role in the group. In another way, being an idol
means they will never leave their characteristics given by the agency. Hwang said that the
fans could consistently love the idol with their persona or image provided by the media.
That culture of idolizing the idol is built by thoughtfully controlling the idol’s stage
characteristics, such as seductive, shyness, cute, and other characteristics that are
subsequently maintained in their public presence.
In an article from The Freeman (via PhilStar), writer Sonny Boy Temblor explained
why Filipinos are captivated by K-Pop music. Temblor said that K-Pop has developed
adistinct character of its own even though it contains pop music influences from the
West. K-Pop is also often presented with “catchy music, and dynamic choreography,” not
to mention its repetitive allure that makes it easier for Filipinos to follow and remember.
Apart from its upbeat tune that makes us bob our heads and shake our hips. K-pop’s
choreography often leaves us in awe as singer’s dance while singing, hence, many k-pop
concerts held in the Philippines are standing-room only.
The rapid spread of K-pop in our country has made a great impact on our people.
More and more students in our school are being influenced by the groove and rhythm of
K-pop.
Nowadays, a lot of teenagers are addicted to K-pop, K-drama and all things that
are connected to South Korea. Many Filipino are acting like a Korean: the way they
speak, like the way they sing and etc. Just like they adopted the culture of the Korea and
maybe K-pop music have positive impact to the Filipino teenagers. The advantage are
they become friendlier, becomes more confident, becomes more open minded, learn how
to budget their money well. Inspired to do things that way will help them in the future.
They learned how to appreciate music, dance and people’s behaviour and often gets
influenced to sing and dance. The disadvantages are that they’re spending most of their
money for K-pop things like albums, concert tickets and etc. They become immature
when it comes to their favorite K-pop idols, they become defensive when it comes to
their favorite idol. That is based on the observation of the researcher. Imagine how K-pop
culture influenced us. Not just imagine how K-pop music influenced us, but also their
culture.

Social

The Korean popular music, or the Korean pop on simply K-pop is a musical
genre consisting of electronic hip-hop, Pop rock, and Rock band music organization in
South Korea. Hyhn (2011) defined K-pop as for Korean pop music that covers a wide
variety of contemporary music including pop, hiphop, and trendy degree pop, electro pop,
and techno. Due to the big wave of success, K-pop became so popular not only in South
Korea but also to other parts of the world especially in the Philippines.
There are teens who become obsessed with K-Pop music. They imitate their
favourite stars. They want to be thin and fit as them. Such obsession can lead to eating
disorders and depression. However, we can talk about the same extremes when we
discuss any other popular genre. When we take our attention away from the extremes,
we’ll realize that music, regardless of its genre, is only beneficial for students. It helps
them bond with their friends. It’s a stress-relieving hobby, and students can benefit from
it.
Korean music, Korean Films, Korean Dramas and being more and more popular as
the days goes by. South Korea is a little private place or we can say it’s close so the first
connection is through music, films, and it’s been a good way to connect and how K-pop
has been around the world. Filipinos idolized K-pop like a theme fan music, Korean is
their language, so Filipinos sings K-pop music, it will also look like they’re the ones
singing it but doesn’t know the meaning of it. They just sing it because they like it.
Based on an article on google, K-pop fans love to shows K-pop music to others they
like to invite people to listen in K-pop music cause inviting people and seeing them
happy listening to K-pop makes them happy, it assume them that K-pop is awesome, and
the main reason why they are inviting is because they want someone to talk about their
idol in K-pop group/ K-pop music.
Being K-pop fan is being friendly but if you insult their idols it will trigger them to
insult you and they will not forget that you insulted their idol, they will always think that
you are their enemy but if it’s only minor you’re still friends.

Study Habits

Teen spend too much time watching music video, drama, searching information
about k-pop idols as a result they lack of sleep, staying up late and sometimes skipping
meals. In other words, it’s because of K-pop and its influence to the students that they
forget to do their habitual activities such as eating and sleeping, these plays important
role in our life especially in the students life, if the students skip their meals particularly
their breakfast there’s a tendency that these students will not participate well in their
school activities. If the students do not achieve atleast eight hours of sleep, they get tired
fast and as a result they will sleep during class hours.

In this statement also it states the negative effects of K-pop towards us. K-pop
greatly influences teens in a bad and good way. Just what is stated above, in other words
K-pop music can influence the study habits of every individual students. And it may lead
the students to fail. Since students have more time, they only focus in K-pop and start
forgetting their tasks in school and their homes. That will cause the students to fail he/she
avoid it.

This is the most serious negative effect that K-Pop stars have on young people. The
biggest stars are being trained from a very young age. They enter a competitive industry,
which imposes various standards for their outward appearance. Everything revolves
around beauty, style, and money in their world.

When students are exposed to such values, they get the impression that education is
not as important as they once assumed. K-Pop idols didn’t get famous because they did
well in maths. The combination of moderate talent, great appearance, and hard training
got them where they are. Many students can be driven off their educational journey when
they get too inspired by those values.
This is a multi-billion-dollar industry. Students don’t just buy the albums. They also
spend on t-shirts and other merchandise that’s not necessary for them. Concert tickets
cost a lot of money, and lead to associated expenses such as travel, food, and
accommodation. Students already have troubles with budgeting. They have to spend
money on textbooks, and pay bills. When they get obsessive over music, the monthly
budget feels the strain. They may start spending less on their studies and more on their
hobbies. Naturally, the grades will reflect the consequences that’s why sometimes it’s
important to think of buying an essay from experts who will not let you down and can
provide you with best works to improve your grades.

Synthesis

Based from the data that is gathered by the researcher this study entitled “The
influence of K-POP towards the Academic performance among Grade 10 students in Lala
National High School,” they have different point of view regarding the influence of K
pop music.
K-pop has a good and bad effect on a person in some way. That some way is the
following; K-pop addiction is just like a game addiction, if the students are too into K-
pop to the point that they forget to do their task, it may ruin their lives. Due to large
influence of K-pop, people have create a community where everyone can join and
interact.
