LEARNING METHODOLOGICAL DESIGN N° 01

ON THE WAY TO OUR INTERNAL ASSESSMENT WITH “THE GIVER” – Chapter I


LEARNING PURPOSES:
✓ To prepare a 3-4 minute organized and well-developed IO Presentation on Chapter I of the literary work “The Giver”
using varied and appropriate language, as well as, nonverbal resources.
✓ To write a 350-450-word coherent and cohesive diary entry on Chapter I of the literary work “The Giver” by using
appropriate written language conventions.
✓ To reflect on and evaluate the effectiveness of their oral and written production through a rubric to set steps to improve.

I. MAKING CONTACT & ASSUMING CHALLENGES:


ACTIVITY 1 – “The Giver” Vocabulary
Competition – Refer to Appendix A, you will find
five activities with words/phrases taken from
Chapter I of the literary book “The Giver”. In 5-10
minute-time and in teams of five you will solve each
activity. The winner group will be the one to get the
most correct answers.

II. ENQUIRING & CONSTRUCTING KNOWLEDGE

ACTIVITY 2 – “The Giver” Quiz – ACTIVITY 3 – “The Giver” Chapter Response


Read “Chapter I” of the literary work “The Read “Chapter I” again and make sure you remember
Giver”, work with a partner, test each most details. Work with the same partner and complete
other’s memory. Who aced it? the form below. Walk around to compare and contrast
ideas with different pairs. Reach a consensus and finally
share with the class supporting your answers. Evaluate
the effectiveness of your partners’ presentation through
the rubric in Appendix B:

ACTIVITY 4: Group Work – In your group, surf the ACTIVITY 5: Concept Map – Get together in
internet and use the graphic organizer to list the pros and different groups, outline a concept-map talking
cons of a small family, and the pros and cons of a big about what you know so far about the social
family. Think beyond just saying one is small and one is organization and personal identity in Jonas’
big. Think of the events that a small family could do and community. Socialize with the class. Evaluate the

What can you learn about a “diary entry”? what criteria does it require to succeed in it? Tell the class.

ACTIVITY 8 – Analysis Chart – In groups of five, fill in an “analysis excel” based on the information previously
provided. Join another group to compare and contrast what you have. Reach a consensus and socialize with the class.

III. TRANSFERENCE & SELF-EVALUATION


ACTIVITY 9: IO Presentation: Read either EXCERPT 1
or 2 in Appendix C. Prepare an oral presentation of it
including the summary and the topics listed in the table
above. Your presentation should be between 3-4
minutes. Use the IB rubric as a guide.
ACTIVITY 12: Writing Tasks: Choose one of the tasks below. Follow the IB rubric to guide your work.
