HOËRSKOOL PEARSON HIGH SCHOOL

ISSUE/UITGAWE: 3 APRIL 2021
END-OF-TERM 1 /EINDE-VAN-KWARTAAL 1

FROM THE PRINCIPAL/VAN DIE SKOOLHOOF

Dit was ’n baie besige en suksesvolle eerste kwartaal.

Ons het stadig, maar seker teruggekeer na ons buitemuurse program.

It was heart-warming to see our learners participating in sport and all

the cultural activities once again. We can also see the progress of our
learners’ academics and we hope that all grades can be back at school
as soon as possible.

A special assembly was held on Wednesday, 21 April to bid farewell to the following staff
members who leave Pearson at the end of this term: Mr Andre Dalton who is retiring after
33 years of teaching at Pearson and Ms Jeanette Makkie who has been at Pearson for the
past 7 years and 4 months. We wish them everything of the best for the new season in their
lives.

Mr Ruan Kruger, who has been assisting in the Health and Fitness Centre for the past 2 years
and 4 months, will also be leaving Pearson.

I ask that parents please indicate your child’s name, grade and register class, e.g. 8E1 or
11E3 when emailing the school. Ons vra dat ouers hul kind se naam, graad en registerklas sal
aandui wanneer e-posse aan die skool gestuur word.

We hope that you enjoy the break - an opportunity to bond and spend time with your 1family.

NETBALL REPORT: FIRST TERM: 15 FEBRUARY to 23 APRIL 2021 from Head Coach, Mr Reg Sharp

This has been a very busy and demanding first term despite the constraints and limitations imposed by the ongoing
COVID/19 pandemic. Thank you once again to Pearson for the opportunity for our Netballers to again participate in
Netball after almost a year`s break. We are indeed grateful to the Eastern Cape Academy of Sport in their valuable
financial and material support of Pearson as a Netball Sport Focus School.

Netball highlights:
•Trials were held and our 21 teams have been selected. Of special mention is the instance of Pearson
selecting an u17A team. This completes the selection of an “A” team for all our Age Groups; u14, u15, u16, u17 & u18.
Pearson will also be entering for the first time all our “A” Teams in the Top Schools Competition hosted by SA Schools
Netball commencing in May 2021. Many of our players, to maximize their own preparation, have also used the Pearson
Club for valuable match practice time at Young Park each week.
•Annual Teambuilding Day for all Netballers was held on 28 February at Pine Lodge. Some 90+ players enjoyed what
turned out to be a most successful and enjoyable day. The Netball Family was well and truly established.
•First Team celebrated their selection with an exhaustive Retreat at Monte Vista in the Elands River Valley.
Congratulations to Cayla Nell, Busi Vayo, Giselle Pheiffer, Anke Strydom, Tenielle Moolman, Clarise Moolman, Bianca
Meiring, Angelique Roodt, Este Smith (as Vice Captain) and Alexa Prinsloo (as Captain) on their selection to the 2021
First Team. It would be an mis-statement if one were to say that the team members departed this event not having
learnt much anew about each other and not now understanding that the success of the team is totally reliant on
complementing each other’s competencies. Unfortunately, the follow-up Training Camp to cement these gains
scheduled for 16/17 April had to be postponed owing to Covid isolation.
•Internal League was introduced in which the Age Group A & B teams have been matched with each other in games
designed to both prepare and finalise the teams for the School matches scheduled in Terms 2 & 3. Three rounds were
held to date producing the following results:
Round 1: U18A/U17A 29-6; U16B/U14A 12-7; U16A/U15A 6-3
Round 2: U17A/U16A 16-10; U15A/U14A 22-8
Round 3: U17A/U15A 22-11; U16A/U16B 20-4 ; U14A/U14B 22-3

The Firsts and u17As have been participating in the Action Indoor Competition which takes place on Friday evenings.
Both have played twice but their third matches were unfortunately postponed because of COVID safety concerns.
Results to date are:
Firsts: vs Mambas (Framesby HS 1sts) 37 -30 (conventional scoring 17-12)
vs Comebacks (Senior Adults) 46-30 (conventional scoring 24-9)
U17As vs Mix & Match (Senior Adults) 41-53 (conventional scoring 25-20)
vs Pink Ribbons (Senior Adults) 38-22 (conventional scoring 26-8)
These results reflect creditably on our Teams` readiness for the Season`s fixtures lying ahead.
•Zonal Trials for 2021 Eastern Cape Team Selections were held at Pearson in mid-April. It proved to be a very memorable
day for Pearson as the following statistics show:
PLAYERS SELECTED TO PROGRESS TO METRO SUB DISTRICT: PE TRIALS
u14: 9 / u15 10 / u16: 7 / u17: 12 / u18: 7 / A total of 45 players. Our congratulations to all Pearson players
accorded this privilege.
•Team Coaches’ Workshop was held in mid-March in which the Head Coach shared the Standard Coaching Methodology
to be used by all Pearson Team Coaches in team preparation and match execution demonstrating with and using the First
Team players as prototypes.
•National Coaches Course was conducted onsite at Pearson in mid-March at which four Pearson Team Coaches received
their Level 1 accreditations. Congratulations to Chante Smith, Mieke du Toit, Marie-Louise Vorster & Gwennie van
Niekerk on this fine achievement and, as a result, joining the ranks of all our other Nationally-accredited Coaches.
•Scorers’/Timekeepers’ Course was conducted at Pearson for a number of Learner volunteers to ensure that
professional Technical officiating will be available at our Home matches. Valuable practical experience was gained by
these Learners at our Internal League fixtures.

5
NETBALL REPORT CONTINUED

•Of course, the proof of the pudding is in the eating. Our Junior Age Group “A” Teams participated in the
Despatch Skommeltoernooi on Saturday 17th April 2021, returning highly commendable results.

U14As: Victories over Collegiate 20-4; Nico Malan 15-5; Despatch 15-10;
Loss to Brandwag 11-14

U15As: Victories over Despatch 15-3; Brandwag 10-1; Nico Malan 12-10

U16As: Victories over Collegiate 12-6; Nico Malan 14-12; Brandwag 11-9;
Loss to Despatch 7-9

Congratulations to the three teams and their respective coaches on an outstanding achievement.

We believe we have prepared well and, Covid permitting, we look confidently forward to a successful Netball
season.

TERM 1 REPORTS
Please note that learners’ first term reports have been e-mailed. We extend our
congratulations to all those learners who have obtained good results or performed to the
best of their abilities. We trust that the others will take steps where necessary to ensure a
better performance next term.
Die behaalde punt in elke vak mag dalk hoër wees as wat dit in Junie sal wees omdat slegs 'n
klein gedeelte nou getoets is. The mark indicated in each subject is based on a number of
tests and assignments completed during the first term. It is a ‘continuous assessment mark’,
which counts towards your child’s final result at the end of this year.

START OF TERM 2
1st Day: Term 2 starts on Monday, 3 May. We start with Week 1 (Day 1) on the timetable.

3-hour Friday DT. A general neatness and uniform and bookbag check
will be done on the first day of term.

Ons wil graag alle ouers versoek om met ons saam te werk om te verseker dat leerders altyd
hulle Pearsonskooldrag met trots sal dra.

The Clothing Shop will be open from 3 May 2021 FROM 11:30—15:15.

Olympics and need to raise a total of
R4.6 million. We are proud of our

National team!

Louise Swain. Many aspects of production, performance, relaxation and
improvisation exercises were covered, as well as basic acting, directing, writing and
staging skills. The groups were all given a short piece to stage and all rose to the
occasion.

EVENTS THAT TOOK PLACE AT PEARSON

The Pearson hiking club

enjoyed a beautiful day out
along the Sacramento hike.

As part of our new Equipt for Life life-

skills programme, instructors from Libre
DoJo presented an introductory self
defence workshop.
Learners were taught how to recognise
potential danger and what to do to get
themselves out of uncomfortable or
threatening situations.
Equipt for Life rewards learners who
develop useful life skills while still at
school. Those who participated left with
a greater awareness and confidence to
defend themselves.

Mrs McVitty Brown hosted a study

skills course for Grade 8 learners.
She taught them how to plan their
study schedule and study area and
gave them tools to study more
effectively and deal with exam
stress. This will help our Grade 8s to
cope with the demands of high
school and to reach their academic
goals. More study skills workshops
will be run in future for those who
missed this one.

The Pearson Music Department had

their first music evening of the year.
Some beautiful performances were
heard on piano, guitar, saxophone,
trumpet, flute, clarinet, and voice.
Well done to all the performers!

The Pearson Angling Club enjoyed

their first angling outing of the year
this past Friday 16 April in very
lovely conditions at Pollock Beach,
Summerstrand. In adhering to
Covid protocol, a limited number of
6 boys was allowed to fish.
Unfortunately no successful catches
but a fun and enjoyable time was
had by all. We look forward to the
next outing.

The Pearson Music Department had

their second music evening on
Thursday, 15 April. The Pearson
Strings opened the evening and was
followed by some amazing solo
performances on violin, saxophone,
flute, piano, and clarinet.

Hands of Hope and Afrisame

organised a 'borg-a-boerie' event. The
learners had fun preparing the
boerewors rolls (and enjoying some
themselves!) and donated the rolls to
the EP Youth and Child Care Centre,
along with hoodies that the Pearson
learners collected. A total of 70 hoodies
were donated. We would like to thank
all Pearsonites for their contribution.
