Section 1
1.0 General Description
The AJ Model Reversing Tool is used to unscrew sections of right-hand pipe and
downhole equipment. Figure 1 illustrates the external parts of this tool.
After the fish has been engaged, right-hand rotation at the Top Coupling will
cause the Toggle Assembly to open and anchor in the well casing. The Toggle
Assembly will adjust to the casing diameter up to its maximum capacity. When
anchoring is accomplished, the Bottom Sub will rotate left-hand by means of
planetary gearing.
Maximum capacity of the Toggle Assembly can be changed in three ways: (1) by
choice of tool OD, (2) by choice of length of carbide tips, and (3) the addition of
wing extensions. The tool is available in four Sizes: No.3 (3-3/4" OD), No.4 (4-
1/16" OD), No.6 (5-13/16" OD) and No.8 (7-3/4" OD). Wing extensions are
available for No.6 and No.8 tools. The minimum/maximum casing size for each
tool, with each combination of Wing extensions, is given in Table 2.

1.1 Use
The Schlumberger AJ Model Reversing Tool is used to unscrew and
recover sections of right-hand strings of pipe that are stuck or lodged in
the well. Using the Reversing Tool on right-hand drill pipe or tubing
eliminates the need for a complete string of left-hand pipe to recover lost
tubing or drill pipe string.
1.2 Construction
The Reversing Tool is a combination of planetary gearing and anchoring
systems. It is capable of converting right-hand torque from the surface to a
powerful left-hand torque below the tool to the fish. Internal diameters give
complete freedom to perform other fishing operations such as washing
down, engaging and disengaging the fish, releasing the tool and the fish
and permits the use of the string shot.
1.3 Operation
The Reversing Tool is designed to run only inside well casing, and under
no conditions should it be operated below the casing in open hole. A left-
hand fishing assembly is made up on the lower end of the Reversing Tool
selected. The fishing assemblies are available from Schlumberger for use
on any condition of fishing that may occur.

2.1 Maintenance Instructions (Short Service)
The AJ Model Reversing Tool should be serviced on each job after every run into
the well. A short service on the Reversing Tool is recommended on the job site.
The following instructions are for short servicing which includes greasing the tool,
checking the Wing Points for damage and for proper tool operation. If the
Reversing Tool requires a complete breakdown for improper tool operation or
damaged parts, proceed to the following pages for Shop Maintenance.
1. The new No.3 (3-3/4" OD) and NO.4 (4-1/16" OD) Tools do not have a
grease fitting, but a pipe plug. Replace the plug with a grease fitting.
Remove the grease cap in the Lubricator Body and grease the Tool with a
grease gun. A good grade of gear grease is suitable for lubrication of the
Reversing Tool. Add grease to the Tool until it is expelled at the upper
grease vent hole in the Lock Ring. Replace grease cap before each tool
run into the well bore. See Figure 2. Replace grease fittings with pipe
plugs in the new No.3 (3-3/4" OD) and NO.4 (4-1/16" OD) Tools.
2. Check the Wing Points in the Toggle Wings. If damaged or dull, the Points
should be replaced. The Wing Points are tapered and fit into tapered holes
in the Toggle Wings. The Wing Points are removed by first expanding the
Wing section. Place the Gear Body in a tool vise and a hand tong on the
Top Coupling. Apply right-hand rotation on the Top Coupling until the
Wings have completely expanded, see Figure 2, View AA. A close look at
the detail in Figure 2 reveals that the Dog Wing Pins are secured in place
with Cotter Keys. Use a pair of needle nose pliers to pull the Keys out of
the Pins. After all the Keys are removed, all the Pins will slide out of the
Wings. Removing Wing Points is done by folding back all the Toggle
Wings. Points are knocked out of the Toggle Wings from the inside with a
Point hammer. Also, see Figure 33 and Figure 34 for proper removal and
assembly of Wing Points. Remove Toggle Wings if severely damaged by
removing the Cotter Keys and then sliding all pins toward the center of the
Toggle Sleeve. Reassembly of Toggle Wings is a reversal of this
procedure.
3. Check tool for proper operation. Place a hand tong on the Top Coupling
and apply right-hand rotation. After the Wings have completely expanded,
the Top Coupling will continue to rotate, but with increased amounts of
friction torque. Check friction torque according to the values listed in Table3.
4. Rotate the Top Coupling to the left to close the Wing Section. The high
side edges of all the Wing Points should be below the OD of the
Reversing Tool. Place a straight edge lengthwise on the Reversing Tool to
check the Wing Points. See Figure 33.

5. Check the bore of the Reversing Tool and remove any obstructions or any
Locking Balls. (Only the AJ No.3 (3-3/4" OD) Old Style Tool uses Locking
Balls.)
6. Check the Top and Bottom Circulating Plug for proper size holes and/or
washouts. See Figure 2.
7. Check all left-hand connections (bottom end of tool from tool joint pin to
Wing section) of the Reversing Tool for movement.

EXPANDING THE WING SECTIONS
AJ - All Sizes
For proper disassembly of the AJ No. 3 (3-3/4" OD), No.4 (4-
1/16" OD), No.6 (5-13/16" OD), and No.8 (7-3/4" OD) Reversing
Tools, place the Tool in a tool vise and steady rest. The tool vise
and steady rest shown in this manual are typical of a
Schlumberger shop service unit. See Figure 70 for a view of the
breakout system as previously described. Other shop or field
breakout systems may vary, however, clamping should be
followed closely as shown.
*Clamp the Gear Body in the tool vise as shown in Figure 3. DO

3.1 Cleaning Procedures
A used Reversing Tool will have drilling muds, oils and tool joint grease on
most parts. Dried, caked mud will need to be water soaked. A grease
solvent will be needed for the oil and grease compounds. Steam cleaning
is ideal when used with a strong degreasing solvent. Other liquid solvents
such as kerosene or Varsol may be used. Steam cleaned parts should be
allowed to dry and cool before inspection. The Tool should be cleaned and
disassembled as soon as possible after use.

4.0 Assembly
4.1 Assembly Reference Marking
The Reversing Tool is special in purpose and is complicated. If the Tool is
incorrectly assembled, it will not function properly. If the Reversing Tool is
correctly assembled and inspected as later described, the Tool will
function properly. It is important to follow the assembly procedures very
closely.
The purpose for Assembly Reference Marking is to assure that the
Reversing Tool will function properly. The importance for Assembly
Reference Marking is for two reasons. First, any Reversing Tool that is
assembled for the first time, or being serviced in the field or shop, should
receive Assembly Reference Markings. As the Reversing Tool is
assembled, critical areas of the tool must pass certain inspection criteria.
Those areas or parts of the tool must function properly before any other
assembly is started. Also, any Assembly Reference Mark across the joint
line between mating members assures the inspector and tool operator that
all parts were made-up to their specified torque. Secondly, any Reversing
Tool that is being serviced that already has these Assembly Reference
Marks, saves the service man considerable time during assembly. These
Assembly Reference Marks can be used as timing marks. Some gear
timing Reference marks are absolutely essential for proper tool operation.
This will allow faster arrangement, alignment and make-up of parts to their
specified torques. Also, several external connections are secured with
Lock Plugs and set screws. The Assembly Reference Marks provide an
easy method of alignment and threading.
The procedure for Assembly Reference Marking begins by observing
Figure 28 and Figure 29 for the proper location of these Marks. Figure 28
shows all the external locations and Figure 29 shows all the internal
locations. As each critical subassembly and parts meet inspection and
assembly procedures, an inspector or qualified service man should mark
the Reversing Tool at every location shown in Figure 28 and Figure 29.
Each area should be marked with a 3/8" O steel letter die. Beside each O,
the inspector should place his own inspection mark for Quality Control
purposes. See Figure 30 for correct placement of Quality Control marking.

ROTATION OF THE GEAR BLOCK ASSEMBLY
AJ - All Sizes
Inspect the Gear Block Assembly for free rotation. Good timing
between the Gear Blocks, Pinions and Stem will allow smooth
rotation in either direction. If any restrictions are discovered,
inspect the Assembly as described below:
1. ASSEMBLY REFERENCE MARKS - Check both Gear Blocks
for correct alignment of Marks. See Critical Factors column.
2. MAKE-UP AND LUBRICATION - All Gear Block cap screws
should be made-up as specified in Table 5. All Pinions and
Stem splines should be adequately lubricated.
3. RESTRICTED ROTATION - Continued tight and/or restricted
rotation will require a complete breakdown of the Gear Block
Assembly. Inspect all Pinions, Pins, Gear Blocks and Stem
splines for any scratches or burrs.
4. GEAR BLOCK REASSEMBLY - Upon reassembly of the
Gear Blocks, rearrange the Pinion assemblies in the Upper
Gear Block. Rebuild the Gear Block Assembly as previously
described in Figure 38 and Figure 39.
Caution 5. ROTATION - The rebuilt Gear Block Assembly should rotate
Avoid injury by keeping around the Stem smoothly in either direction. *See Figure 40. If

The Thrust Nut is a very critical part of the Reversing Tool and
should be inspected first before any further assembly. Inspect
the Thrust Nut for the following:
THREAD GALLING - Minor thread damage may be corrected
with a file. If severe thread damage is found, the entire Thrust
Nut must be replaced.
ROTATION - The Nut should turn freely. However, excessive
looseness will require replacement.
*NOTE

5.0 Testing the AJ Model Reversing Tool
Several tests should be performed on the Reversing Tool to check for proper
operation. This includes locking of the tool, Wing activation, reverse rotation,
friction, and for leaks.
5.2 Friction
After the Wing section has completely opened or expanded, the amount of
torque required to continue right-hand rotation will increase noticeably.
The torque required to continue rotation should follow the values listed in
Table 4.
5.4 Locking
To test the Reversing Tool for locking, *assemble the Solid Test Subs onto
the top and bottom tool joints as shown in Figure 69. Remove the bottom
Circulating Plug and replace with a solid pipe plug and make-up hand tight
with a hex wrench. Also, remove the upper Circulating Plug and replace
with a Fill Adapter and make-up hand-tight with an adjustable wrench. The
Fill Unit shown for testing the Reversing Tool is a Schlumberger CC600
Hydraulic Console, see Figure 69 and Figure 70.
The hydraulic pressure required to lock the tool is between 150-200 psi,
however, for the testing of leaks as later described, 1,000 psi is required.
Any other Fill Unit capable of this psi is acceptable, however, a needle
valve to release pressure may be required.
Pressurize the Reversing Tool to 150-200 psi. Place a hand tong on the
Top Coupling and slowly apply right-hand rotation. Only 1/4 to 1/2 turn is
all that is required to align the Locking Key to the Stem. When the Tool is
ES21.39940B 74 of 90 AJ
Schlumberger Private – Reversing Tool
Customer Product Classification Service Manual
Section 5 Testing the AJ Model Reversing Tool
correctly aligned, a loud click should be heard near the Gear Body, thus
signifying that the Reversing Tool is locked. Also, the entire Tool should
become rigid and cease to turn in either direction. Should the Top
Coupling continue to rotate more than one full turn, check the Fill Unit for
proper psi and for any possible Tool leaks. If the Reversing Tool will not
lock, disassemble the Bottom Sub and Lubricator Body and inspect the
Locking Key and Spring for possible damage. Reassemble after
inspection and retest the Reversing Tool as previously described.
5.5 Leaks
While the Reversing Tool is still properly assembled for lock testing, the
Tool should be pressurized to 1,000 psi for five minutes. Inspect the Tool
for leaks. If the Reversing Tool passes all testing procedures, remove the
solid plug and Fill Adapter. Replace the upper and lower Circulating Plugs
and make-up to the specified torque as listed in Table 5. Also, remove
both Solid Test Subs as shown in Figure 69.
Only this size Tool requires a 9/16" OD Drop Ball that must be inserted
into the Top Coupling before the Solid Test Subs are assembled. After the
Reversing Tool is passed from all testing, THE DROP BALL MUST BE
REMOVED.

ALSO SEE Table 7
*Torque Multiplication Ratio is gear teeth ratio. Actual Torque Ratio of input to output in lbf·ft (kg-
m) will depend on the well and operating conditions. Also, the torque ratio will always be less than
theoretical ratio shown.
**This is Input Torque Yield Load. Always allow as much safety margin as possible. Input Torque
is multiplied by the Reversing Tool according to the above table depending on tension taken on
the Reversing Tool.
EXAMPLE: Output Torque of NO. 3 Reversing Tool with 4,000 lbf·ft (553 kg-m) Input Torque and
under 5,000 Ibs (2,268 kg) Tension will be 1.60 x 4000 lbf·ft (553 kg-m) = 6,400 lbf·ft (885 kg-m)
Output Torque. The same size tool with 0 Ibs (kg) Tension and 4,000 lbf·ft (553 kg-m) Input
Torque will be 1.78 x 4,000 lbf·ft (553 kg-m) = 7,120 lbf·ft (984 kg-m).
