V-I characteristics of PN junction diode

December, 2023

Eng. Amjed Al-Shagthah.

Objectives:
• To understand the concept and working of a PN junction diode.
• Constructing the circuit using software program.
• Constructing the circuit with hardware connection.
• To observe waveform at the output and to obtain V-I characteristics of
PN junction diode.
Overview:
• A diode is a two-terminal electronic component that conducts current
primarily in one direction.
• It has low resistance in one direction, and high resistance in the other.
Biasing of PN Junction Diode:
• Depending upon the polarity of the D.C. voltage externally applied to
diode ,the biasing is classified as:
Forward biasing:
• +ve terminal of the input supply is connected to anode (P-side) and –
ve terminal of the input supply is connected the cathode.
• Height of the potential barrier at the junction is lowered by an
amount equal to given forward biasing voltage.
Biasing of PN Junction Diode..
Reverse bias operation:
• If negative terminal of the input supply is connected to anode (pside)
and –ve terminal of the input supply is connected to cathode (n-side)
then the diode is said to be reverse biased.
• In this condition an amount equal to reverse biasing voltage increases
the height of the potential barrier at the junction.
• The diode can be approximated as an open circuited switch.

• Forward biasing:

• Reverse biasing:
Circuit components/Equipment:
• Variable power supply.
• A junction diode 1N4007.
• Resistor 1k-ohm.
• Oscilloscope.
• Multimeters.
• Connecting wires.
• Breadboard.
Procedure:
Forward Bias Condition:
1. Connect the circuit as shown in Fig.1(PN Junction diode with milli-
ammeter in series with the diode).
2. Initially vary Regulated Power Supply (RPS) voltage Vs in steps of 2V.
3. Tabulate different forward currents obtained for different forward
voltages.
4. Plot the V-I characteristics and calculate the resistance levels .
Procedure:
Reverse Bias Condition:
1. Connect the circuit as shown in Fig.2 .
2. Vary Vs in the Regulated Power Supply (RPS) gradually in steps of
0.1V.
3. Tabulate different reverse currents obtained for different reverse
voltages.
4. Plot the V-I characteristics and calculate the resistance levels.
