Team A:

Smart Sensor Exploration


Distance Sensor
1. Verify that your smart sensor is connected to the correct ports of the brain and the
brain is turned on.
2. Navigate to the Device Info screen on the brain.
a. If you just turned on the brain, tap the Devices button to view a list of all the
devices connected to the brain.
b. If your brain is already on, press the Power button on the brain to exit to the
Device Info screen.
3. Tap the distance sensor in Port 9. You may notice a difference in the data that
you receive from the smart motors compared to the 3-wire motors. You may notice a
difference in the data that you receive from the smart devices compared to the 3-wire
devices. The smart devices are able to collect and process data on their own and then
work with the brain to show multiple sensor values at once.
4. Place your notebook just above the distance sensor. Watch the values on the screen
as you move with the notebook away from and toward the distance sensor. To toggle
the measurement values between the SI and US Customary systems, tap in the
Distance section. (If you do not see a change, you may need to tap and hold or tap
multiple times.)

5. If necessary, swap testbeds with another team so you have access to their optical
sensor.

Optical Sensor
6. Verify that your smart sensor is connected to the correct ports of the brain and the
brain is turned on.
7. Navigate to the Device Info screen on the brain.
a. If you just turned on the brain, tap the Devices button to view a list of all the
devices connected to the brain.
b. If your brain is already on, press the Power button on the brain to exit to the
Device Info screen.
8. Tap the optical sensor in Port 2.
9. Place your notebook just above the optical sensor. Watch the values on the screen as
you move the notebook away from and toward the optical sensor.

Record the distance and hue values of the optical sensor.

10. Tap Mode to switch between gesture and hue and move the notebook above the
sensor.
11. On the optical sensor screen, tap the Led Brightness box. With each tap, the
brightness increases 10%.

12. Tap to turn on the LED at different levels of brightness and move the notebook or
other objects of different colors in front of the sensor.
