Using Sets of Angles and Starnet Sets of Angles Perform a check and adjust on the instrument and check of tribrachs prior to undertaking control surveys. Instrument settings L 2. 10, Sets of Angles must be installed on the TS15/ TS16 Create a new job on the TS15/1S16 (this is where all observations are to be stored) ~ NOTE: In creating the new job, the correct scale factor for the area needs to be set in the instrument (e.g. 0.999906) Or eg, for an RMS project, the combined mean scale factor will be provided on the survey control drawing or inthe survey control report ~ IF, however, the survey control being measured is for abridge then the scale factor needs to be set to SF 1.0. This SF 1.0 may also be required eg, for dimensional control work. ~ Ifthe scale factor is unknown, then use SF 1.0 and reduce in StarNet using the appropriate MGA coordinate system for your area. Once the job has been created, set the temperature and atmospheric pressure on the instrument ‘Settings’ >'2 TS Instrument’ > ‘3 Atmospheric Corrections’ ‘These measurements need to be taken with a calibrated thermometer and barometer. ‘An instrument setup needs to be undertaken to record the instrument height and atmospheric measurements in the StarNet dat fie. NOTE: this is not necessary, but more processing of the dat file wil need to take place in the office fit is not done. Only a two-point resection is necessary; or if you are setup over a mark, a shot to a backsight. Do not get too carried away with this ~ its for the dat file only. The orientation is not adopted once you start using Sets of Angles. There is no point in doing a resection with three or more targets as they will be voided in the at fie later. Once the instrument setup is complete, start sets of angles (‘Measure Sets’ on the instrument). Hit ‘F’ (function) and then ‘Settings’. Page across to Tolerances’ and ensure that ‘Use tolerances’ is ticked. Hz and V should be set to 0°00'16". Hit ‘OK’ On the first page ~ ‘What do you wont to do? select ‘Create a new group’ ‘Point Group Name’ this is set by the instrument and is normally an incremented number of your Job Name. There should be no reason to change this — it ‘Store’. ‘How do you want to add points to the group?” Set this to ‘Measure points’. = Measure method should be set to ‘Yes, using ABBA. NOTE: ABBA observations are clockwise face left and then reverse order in face right in an anticlockwise direction, = Leave “Add individual points from a job’ and ‘Add all points from a job’ unticked Unless you have a specific reason to use these functions. ‘Define Points for Set’ This screen is used to define the target definitions for the point you are about to measure.Using Sets of Angles and Starnet ‘Point 1D’ ~ This is the name of the survey mark. If it is a known coordinate, use the same characters as used in the control file (ie. ifthe station name is ‘E0123’ then input "£50123. Ths is important for later as it will need to match when processing in StarNet. Ifit is a new mark that you are coordinating, use a name of your choice, even if you do not know what the final name will be; this can be edited later. Just make sure that whatever name you choose, you use the exact name in each set of measurements. suggest putting an ‘x’ atthe start, so that all your newly established targets are grouped together inthe StarNet pt file (i. if you are going to name a target ‘New01’, input ‘yNew01'). See below: 333273.07700 6 00 333444.59600 € 07600 333402, 16100 73000 333430. 455 333292 34 PSM23,050 333355, 63.60 PSH93.,056 333397. 3.93900 333330 333308. 3333554252 333317 4.73702 333324 161602 63.62605 333336 3.69331 333410 333425. Finally, if shooting tape targets, regardless if they are known coordinates or newly established coordinates, they will need to be broken up between each setup. This is due to the inaccuracy of tape targets when measuring them from an angle (NOTE: try to shoot tape targets directly perpendicular where possible. (ie. ifa tape target is named ‘TT01’ — add a corresponding letter at the end to distinguish it from observations from other setups. So, if you are reading a tape target in the first set of rounds, name it ‘TTO1a’ ~‘a' will distinguish it as a reading from the first setup. Likewise, in the second setup, name it ‘TTOLb’, etc. Later, you will average each observation to deduce a final reading. NOTE: If tape target is selected these will not be selectable. ‘Automatically measure points’~tck this box f using a prism (if tcked, the instrument ‘will automatically read the target as it measures each point). If using a tape target, untick this box (manual targeting will be required for tape targets). = Check that everything you have input is correct and select ‘OK. “Select Points ~ Measure’ This screen is used to measure the target. Ensure that the instrument is correctly aimed at the target and hit Measure’ You now have one target measured and the instrument will return to the ‘Define Points for Set’ screen. Repeat the process for each target in the set. NOTE: as each target is measured a tally will be displayed at the top of the screen, Once all targets are observed hit ‘Done’. As ll targets were manually measured in face left, the instrument will now turn to face right and read the same targets in reverse order, counter clockwise. Once the first set is complete, the instrument will ask what to do next, select ‘Measure sets’ A total of six sets is required to satisfy RMS standards. As one set has already been recorded, an additional 5 sets is necessary. The instrument will ask how many further sets you require, input ‘S' and hit ‘OK. The instrument will now conduct its observations. Ifthe instrument is obstructed, you may need to hit ‘etry’ or ‘measure’ when prompted. ‘When the set is complete, the instrument will provide a summary of the sets measured and how many were in tolerance. If targets were skipped or out of tolerance, you can ‘measure these again. Otherwise select ‘Exit app’. Continue to the next setup or export the file using the format file: ‘StarNet v2.20.FRT’. If you do not have this, contact your State Manager or survey manager. Instrument Tolerance There may be an error message stating that the angular measurement is out of tolerance. We have had this when the line of sight is not completely clear e.g. shooting through a fence. The line needs to be clear. I could also occur as sometimes the instrument does not shoot the first target accurately enough or the target is too close. Your own judgement will be required for the specific circumstance that you are in. Remember, there will be six sets of measurements in each setup — if one reading is out of tolerance for whatever reason, it can be removed from the StarNet reduction later, don’t stress too muchUsing Sets of Angles and Starnet StarNet License StarNet is a SINGLE use network license that is accessed via ESO's VPN. The user must be connected to ESO's VPN or a blue cable in an ESO office, to use the license, Please contact Mike Moreno, ESO's IT specialist, to set this up for you. NOTE THAT -- the license we have is for version 8.1 only; not the current version of Starnet which is on the Microsurvey website, Install microsurvey-starnet-8.1.2.990-en.exe The license server is 192.168.21.160 NOTE THAT THIS IS A SINGLE USE LICENSE. If StarNet is left open on your device, then no one else can use it. The best option is that you prepare > check > edit the .dat file as much as possible first, before you open StarNet. Raw .dat File The exported format file from your instrument should have the file extension ‘dat’ so that it can be read into StarNet. | suggest keeping an unedited ‘raw’ copy of this file for your records and using a copied version for your edits Edited .dat File 1. The first step is to do some quick edits on your copied .dat file. > check there is a DB and a DE at ‘each of your sets and to hashtag out the two-point resection measurements or back-sight measurement (these are not needed). 2. Add control. This can be done by two methods >a.) Insert the control in the edited .dat file at the top, below the ‘3D’. -3D ce 6257803. 28123 nt € Nooe.ta 6287844. 4877 ne C NCO8.Tb e2s7e44, 1.28877 nee c 6257387. 131174 ne € NC25.Ta 6287986, 73462 nt © mC29.Tb 6287956 173462 a © NCO6.T 6257794, 63931 in b,) the second method is to create a separate file for control only. This is useful when you are ‘working on a project for an extended period, where the control file is large or remains constant. NOTE: Additional .dat files can also be added and kept separately. This is useful when you do aUsing Sets of Angles and Starnet large control network over multiple days, in multiple areas or composing of different surveyors. See below: Gea: we Click to add files Index ‘Sq 201019871 Constrained 3 ‘i[E) 201019871 Constrained dat w[E] 207020ST1 dat Control SCLWW SMTEN Al 1911 12HA dst How to Construct the Control Line Control in Starnet is recognized by the lette The control line is structured as: C> (Control Name) > (Easting) > (Northing) > (RL) > Constraint of how Starnet can adjust the mark. It does not matter if each element is separated by space or tab or a combination, Starnet should still recognise it. The easting, northing and RL of each control mark can be fixed, floated or weighed, fixed - t= float ~ 0,001 = an example of a weight. Note this isa factor measurement, it does not indicate ‘Imm. The higher the number, the higher the factor (distance Starnet can adjust the mark) For example: CNCOGT —331784.225 6257794924 89.639 us CNCOGT —331784.225 6257794.924 89,639 0.001 0.001 0.005 CNCO6T —331784.225 6257794924 89.639 aul = The first example shows the Easting and Northing as fixed, while the RLis floated. This ‘might be where the height of a mark cannot be trusted, while the positional data is sound. ~The second example shows the Easting and Northing with a weight of 0.001 and the RL is floated by 0.005, This allows the height to move at a higher factor than the position. The last example shows a weight of 1 for the Easting and Northing, while the RL is fixed. This allows the positional data to float within a large ellipsoid, while the RL is held. This ‘may be for a bench mark (BM) where the height is to be held, but the positional data is not necessary.Using Sets of Angles and Starnet Pre-adjustment Open Starnet and create a new project. If you name the project the same as the dat file, ‘then it will be loaded in automatically ~ If you have additional dat files or control files, then add them to the project. = Set the project options. Along the top menu bar, select ‘Options’ and then you have two choices, a) Project and b) Company. ‘Project’ sets the project options for the current project, while ‘Company’ sets the project options for all future projects. Scroll down to view the results The coordinate, direction, distance and zenith adjustments are displayed in separate sections. If there is an error, it wll be shown in the ‘StdRes’ column. Anything under 3.0 is deemed acceptable, while anything over will be flagged with an *asterisk This is a powerful tool, as you can quickly use it to identify errors in your adjustment. Examples of errors could be: a. An excavator moved past your instrument while it was taking a measurement, causing that reading to be wrong. In this instance that line in the .dat file can beUsing Sets of Angles and Starnet hashed out. b. You input the incorrect target height of a mark you were reading in one of your setups, That whole set would be flagged, allowing you to identify it and check to see if the data entered was correct. c. You named a target with the wrong point ID, causing Starnet to want to move those ‘measurements into the incorrect spot. These measurements will be flagged, allowing you to find your error (in this instance you would identity the point in the set and give ita different name to allow Starnet to move it independently. E.g, A100 from Setup does not agree with A100 from Setup2 and Setup3. Renaming the mark as A100a in Setup! will allow Starnet to move these measurements independently; giving you the chance to identify the incorrect naming in the Network Plot) ‘An example of an adjustment is shown below: The readings above 3.0 in the ‘StdRes’ have been flagged with an asterisk. The highest error is. grouped at the top. From station XX20, the marks XX03, RO27 and TTPSO1aa do not agree, Notice how the first three readings are 666.9, 622.1 and 479.9, while all the other errors are between 42 andUsing Sets of Angles and Starnet 61. This would suggest that there is an issue with the top three readings and they should be removed (hashed out) from the dat file (Starnet gives you the line numbers to quickly scroll to the correct position of the measurements in the file). {As the first three readings are particularly bad, this shows that the error caused by them are affecting all other measurements with the same name as Starnet tries to fit them all into a mutual position. Hashing out those three marks should fix the error with the remaining readings. Output Files (Once you are happy with your adjustment, you can use a number of files that Starnet automatically generates, Network Plot R073 R027 ROTS [EB eect The network plot is useful is seeing your control network. This comes in handy when weeding out ‘marks that have been named incorrectly. Listing File The .ist file is a copy of the listing file - the results of your adjustment. Points File The .pts file is an output ofall the adjusted coordinates. | suggest putting them into a spreadsheet to see how results vary compared to previous adjustments or control files. The final adjustment of these ‘can be used to create your control file.
