ENGL 2010

Professor McFarland

Final Course Evaluation

Throughout the course, I have been working on a project related to the lack of medical

care within the U.S. prison system. This issue became very apparent to me after a family

member was released from jail and shared their experience with me. Before this, I had never

really thought about the medical care that inmates receive in prisons. It made me realize how

little awareness there is about this issue and how little is being done to improve it.

I was determined to bring attention to this problem and educate others about it. However, it was

challenging to find the necessary information for the project. I had to search for journals, news

articles, and other sources to gather the information I needed. Despite the difficulty, I remained

supportive of the cause and was determined to create something meaningful.

Initially, I started with writing a paper, which is what most college students do. However, I

switched to using Canva, which made the process more enjoyable and allowed me to be more

creative with my projects. Creating visual representations of the information helped me to better

understand the issue and present it more engagingly.

Although adapting to the magazine project was difficult, I was able to incorporate my

information project into it. I chose this project because I am most proud of it and the amount of

information it contains, which makes it easy to read and understand. During the course, I tried to

use emotional and visual cues in my writing to make it more effective. It was helpful to look back
on my previous writing and see how much I have improved in this regard. Addressing issues

that are not often discussed allowed me to broaden my perspective and develop more

compassion for those affected by them. Working in a group was challenging as not everyone

contributed equally, but having one reliable partner helped me to get feedback and stay

motivated. Overall, this project has been an eye-opening experience and has taught me a lot

about the importance of advocating for those who are often overlooked. Throughout the course,

The more I looked into the issue, the more I realized how widespread it is. I found that

many inmates in the U.S. do not receive the medical care they need, and this can have serious

consequences for their health and well-being. This includes conditions such as mental illness,

addiction, and chronic illnesses that require ongoing treatment.

I was determined to bring attention to this problem and educate others about it. However, it was

challenging to find the necessary information for the project. I had to search for journals, news

Working in a group was challenging as not everyone contributed equally, but having one reliable

partner helped me to get feedback and stay motivated. I had to learn how to communicate

effectively and adapt to different working styles. It was a valuable experience that taught me a

lot about teamwork and collaboration.

Overall, this project has been an eye-opening experience and has taught me a lot about the

importance of advocating for those who are often overlooked. It has made me more aware of

the issues facing our society and more committed to making a positive difference in the world. I

hope to continue working on projects that raise awareness of important issues and inspire

others to take action.

The first big idea suggests that language and writing aren't merely tools for

communication, but rather powerful resources that shape our actions, identities, and creations.
It implies that through language and writing, we don't just convey information; we enact change,

express ourselves, and construct realities. For instance, in my Magazine Project for ENGL

2010, I applied this concept by carefully selecting language and writing styles that aligned with

the goals and themes of my magazine. Each word choice and sentence structure aimed not just

to convey information but to evoke emotions, provoke thoughts, and shape perceptions. Here's

an example of an article from my magazine where I employed this idea

The second big idea highlights rhetoric as a method for analyzing how language and

writing function. It suggests that by understanding the strategies and techniques behind

communication, we can better appreciate and utilize its power. In my ENGL 2010 Magazine

Project, I used rhetorical analysis to dissect various texts, advertisements, and articles relevant

to my magazine's theme. By examining the rhetorical devices employed, such as ethos, pathos,

and logos, I gained insights into how language influences audience perceptions and actions.

This understanding informed my writing strategies, helping me craft content that effectively

engaged my target audience. Here's an example where I applied rhetorical analysis in my

magazine

In addition to my English class, I have used this writing style for other significant

projects. I even created a PowerPoint presentation for the 8th bi-annual criminal justice and
equity conference, where I was able to share my ideas with important individuals. Through my

presentation, I showed many people that the particular topic I was discussing is not talked about

enough and needs to be discussed more. It was a great opportunity to share the knowledge I

gained and raise awareness about the issue.
