PHYLUM PLATYHELMINTHES
The name Platyhelminthes is from two Greek words:platy=flat: helminthes=worms.members of
this phylum are generally referred to as flatworms.
General Characteristics:
1.Triploblastic,bilaterally symmetrical and are at the Organ-system level of organization.
2.Lack circulatory and respiratory systems,and also lack metamerism.
3.Are Acoelomate (I.e.possess no coelom).Spaces between the tissues are filled with parenchyma.
4.Gut(digestive system)may be absent(e.g.in Cestoda).When present,the gut may consist of loose
syncytium or well-developed with branches:however,anus is absent (ie.they have incomplete
digestive system).
5.Excretory system usually consist of flame cells(Protonephridia)and excretory vessels.
6.Nervous system consists of a pair of anterior Gangalia or nerve ring connecting to one of five
pairs of longitudinal nerve cords
7.Most are hermaphroditic(ie.monoecious).
8.Some are free living,most of which are marine (e.g.many in class Tuberllaria,such as Dugesia).
Some others are parasitic.
ECONOMIC IMPORTANCE:
1 .Free-living aquatic turbellarians contribute to the aquatic fauna as zooplanktons.
2.Monogeanea: -Gryodactylus is an ectoparasite on the skin and gills of fishes.
