Valentin Hauy developed a system of reading for the blind. He printed


normal letters in relief that could be felt by a touch of finger. He also
started a school for the blind children. Hauy’s system of reading for
the blind was very useful. But it was quite difficult to learn. Moreover,
it was only a reading system. There was no way for the blind to write
in this system, In 1819, a ten-year-old blind boy named Louis Braille
entered Hauy’s school. He was an intelligent student and quickly
learnt to read with the help of embossed letters. But he soon realised
the disadvantages in Hauy’s system. He made up his mind to develop
an easier method of reading and writing for the blind. And in 1824,
when he was only 15, Braille invented a system of writing which has
been accepted all over the world. He was yet a student in Hauy’s
school. This school is now known as the National Institute for Blind
