The document discusses a homework assignment on software engineering topics. It includes 6 questions - the first asks to discuss software characteristics and compare to hardware, the second asks to design a level 1 DFD for a library information system, the third asks to compare SDLC models, the fourth asks to design a level 1 DFD for a hospital system, the fifth asks about iterative waterfall model phases, and the sixth asks to design a context diagram for a supermarket rewards program.

1. Discuss the term Software. List out the characteristics of software in 5 M1 CO BT1
comparison with hardware characteristics. 1

2. The SE VLabs Institute has been recently setup to provide state-of- 5 M2 CO BT2
the-art research facilities in the field of Software Engineering. Apart 2
from research scholars (students) and professors, it also includes
quite a large number of employees who work on different projects
undertaken by the institution.
As the size and capacity of the institute is increasing with the time, it
has been proposed to develop a Library Information System (LIS) for
the benefit of students and employees of the institute. LIS will enable
the members to borrow a book (or return it) with ease while sitting at
his desk/chamber. The system also enables a member to extend the
date of his borrowing if no other booking for that particular book has
been made. For the library staff, this system aids them to easily
handle day-to-day book transactions. The librarian, who has
administrative privileges and complete control over the system, can
enter a new record into the system when a new book has been
purchased, or remove a record in case any book is taken off the shelf.
Any non-member is free to use this system to browse/search books
online. However, issuing or returning books is restricted to valid
users (members) of LIS only.
The final deliverable would a web application, which should run only
within the institute LAN. Although this reduces security risk of the
software to a large extent, care should be taken no confidential
information (eg., passwords) is stored in plain text.

1
A supermarket needs to develop the following software to encourage
regular customers. For this, the customer needs to supply his/her
residence address, telephone number, and the driving license number.
Each customer who registers for this scheme is assigned a unique
customer number (CN) by the computer. A customer can present his
CN to the check out staff when he makes any purchase. In this case,
the value of his purchase is credited against his CN. At the end of
each year, the supermarket intends to award surprise gifts to 10
customers who make the highest total purchase over the year. Also, it
intends to award a 22 caret gold coin to every customer whose
purchase exceeded Rs.10,000. The entries against the CN are the
reset on the day of every year after the prize winners’ lists are
generated.
