EEB231 - Assignment 2 (2023) - QUESTIONS

The document contains two questions about calculating magnetic field properties in electrical circuits. Question 1 involves calculating the magnetic field density in the airgaps of a dc motor given properties of the stator, rotor, coils and current. Question 2 involves calculating reluctance, required current, mmf, flux and field intensity in a coil wrapped around a ferromagnetic core with an airgap, given various properties.

ASSIGNMENT 2

OCTOBER 2023
Question 1
Figure Q1 shows a simplified diagram of rotor and stator of a dc motor. The stator and the rotor
cores are made of iron whose relative permeability is 2000. The mean path length of the stator
is 50 cm and its cross sectional area is 12 𝑐𝑚2 . The mean path length of the rotor is 5 cm and
its cross sectional area is 12 𝑐𝑚2 . Each airgap between the stator and rotor is 0.05 cm wide,
and the cross sectional area of each airgap including fringing effect is 14 𝑐𝑚2 . If the coil has
200 turns and the current flowing through the coil is 1.0 amp calculate Magnetic field density
in the airgaps. (20)

Question 2
A coil of wire has 400 turns wound around a ring of ferromagnetic core of mean length of 40
cm. There is also a small airgap of 0.05 cm in the structure. The cross sectional area of the core
is 12 𝑐𝑚2 , and the relative permeability of the core is 4000. Assuming that fringing in the air
gap increases the effective cross sectional area of the air gap by 5%, find:
(a) The total reluctance of the flux path (10)
(b) Current required to produce a magnetic field density of 0.5 Tesla in the air gap. (8)
(c) Total magnetomotive force (mmf) (3)
(d) Flux flowing through the circuit (3)
(e) Magnetic field intensity across the air gap (6)
