LEARNING DESIGN

TITLE 20-HOUR LACTATION MANAGEMENT EDUCATION TRAINING

Eastern Visayas Medical Center has been designated as Mother Baby Friendly Hospital since 1992 and regarded as the Laboratory Center for
breastfeeding and lactation management region wide. It is the collaborating Center for trainings on the promotion protection and in
supporting breastfeeding of the WHO guidelines on the 10 steps to Successful breastfeeding and the strict prohibitions on the use of breast
milk substitutes. (EO 51, 2006).

In compliance to Administrative Order No. 2007-0026 –the Revitalization of the MBFHI in Health Facilities with Maternity and Newborn
Services , AO N0. 2009-0025- Adopting New Policies and Protocol on Essential Newborn Care , AO 2005-0014- the National policies on Infant
RATIONALE and Young Child Feeding which aims to ensure the provisions of globally accepted evidenced-based Integrated Essential Maternal Newborn
Care focusing on the first week of life and to ensure exclusive breastfeeding from birth to six months and start safe appropriate, timely
complementary feeding at six months of life ,and continue to breastfeed up to two years or beyond for as long as there is milk (IYCF) for
newborn infants growth and development.

Hence, it is important to train health workers to develop necessary skills towards a more sustainable actions to support, promote and
protect breastfeeding through Integrated Approach on Essential Maternal Newborn Care and Lactation Management practices that will
somehow meet the DOH thrust on improving maternal and newborn’s health outcomes.

COMPETENCY(S) Care Management – Intermediate Level


Ability to employ a team-based, patient-centered and collaborative approach designed to assist patients and their support systems in
managing medical conditions more effectively to achieve the goals of cost savings, improved quality and enhanced patient experience
through:
GOAL(S)
 Facilitates care coordination of pregnant and pot-partum mothers thru proper communication in breastfeeding counselling and discus
the importance and correlation between health facilities, legal mandates by adhering to Executive Order No. 51 and roles and
responsibilities as well by family and community towards proper birth and breastfeeding practices for healthier mother and child.

COMPETENCY(S) Effective Communication - Intermediate Level


Ability to receive and convey ideas, instructions, and information by using appropriate language, method and manner to ensure the
audience understands the message and takes necessary action through:

 Counsels mother using verbal and non-verbal communication to build mother’s confidence and support to breastfeed successfully
specially primigravidas and mothers who use previously bottle feeding.
GOAL(S)
 Discuss how to give on-ongoing support for lactating mother thru proper communication and reads body language and other non-
verbal cues accurately and uses that understanding to structure and give appropriate responses that plays an important role in giving
proper help and assessment.

COMPETENCY(S) Health Promotion and Health Education- Intermediate Level


Ability to work in partnership with other health care providers, clients, families and the community in preventing illness, promoting and
protecting the health of the individual and the society through:

GOAL(S)  Identifies unsafe behaviors during breastfeeding that warrants interventions thru proper health education.
 Formulates appropriate health educations programs for clients, families and communities and communicate it effectively starting with
prenatal, labor and delivery and during early post-partum weeks to manage early breastfeeding problems.

COMPETENCY(S) Maternal and Newborn Care – Intermediate Level


Ability to exhibit knowledge and skills from obstetrics, neonatology, the social sciences, public health and ethics that form the basis of high
quality, culturally relevant, appropriate care for women, newborns, and child bearing families through:

GOAL(S)  Identifies and apply the proper skills necessary in implementing the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding.
 Identify and explain the anatomy and physiology of the breast, milk production, and demonstrate the proper breastfeeding position
and manage problems during breastfeeding.
