UNICEF

international organization

Name: UNICEF (/ˈjuːniˌsɛf/), originally called the United Nations

International Children's Emergency Fund in full, now officially United
Nations Children's Fund

Notion: UNICEF is an agency of the United Nations responsible for

providing humanitarian and developmental aid to children worldwide. The
agency is among the most widespread and recognizable
social welfare organizations in the world, with a presence in 192 countries
and territories. UNICEF's activities include providing immunizations and
disease prevention, administering treatment for children and mothers
with HIV, enhancing childhood and maternal nutrition,
improving sanitation, promoting education, and providing emergency
relief in response to disasters

History: UNICEF was created in 1946 to provide relief to children in

countries devastated by World War II. After 1950 the fund directed its
efforts toward general programs for the improvement of children’s welfare,
particularly in less-developed countries and in various emergency
situations. The organization’s broader mission was reflected in the name it
adopted in 1953, the United Nations Children’s Fund. UNICEF was awarded
the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1965. It is headquartered in New York City.

UNICEF and the Sustainable Development Goals

Investing in children and young people to achieve a more equitable, just and
sustainable world for all.
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were adopted by all United
Nations Member States in 2015 to end poverty, reduce inequality and build
more peaceful, prosperous societies by 2030. Also known as the Global
Goals, the SDGs are a call to action to create a world where no one is left
behind.

The SDGs cannot be achieved without the realization of child rights. As

world leaders work to deliver on the 2030 promise, children around the
globe are standing up to secure their right to good health, quality
education, a clean planet and more. The leaders of tomorrow, children’s
ability to protect the future for us all depends on what we do to secure
