STANDARDS AUSTRALIA

Australian Standard
Specification for test sieves

1 SCOPE This Standard specifies the requirements for test sieves made from woven
wire cloth or from plates with square or round perforations for use in determining the size
distribution of granular products in the particle size range 32 µm to 125 mm.
The aperture sizes and tolerances of this Standard apply to new test sieves.
For wire cloth test sieves, successive sizes of which are in a ratio of about 1:2, the R40/3
series of aperture sizes is proposed. For perforated plate test sieves, both the R40/3 and
the R20 series are proposed, particularly to meet the requirements of the aggregate, coal
and iron industries.
NOTES:
1 Appendix A provides guidance on information to be supplied by purchasers when ordering
test sieves.
2 Appendix B describes the procedure for inspecting woven wire test sieves.
3 Appendix C describes the procedure for inspecting perforated plate test sieves.
4 Appendix D describes the procedure for calibrating woven wire cloth or perforated plate test
sieves.
5 Appendix E gives information on the maintenance of test sieves.

Material Range of aperture size for which suitable
Phosphor bronze Less than 250 mm
Brass 250 µm to 16 mm
Stainless steel All sizes

2 Other suitable material may be specified.

6.2 Wire After the cloth is mounted in the test sieve, the average wire diameter at
different positions across the sieving surface shall be uniform so that the limits on
aperture size can be satisfied.
Selection of the actual wire diameter to be used in the manufacture of wire cloth shall be
maintained within a tolerance of ±5% of the nominal wire diameter given in Table B1 of
Appendix B.
6.3 Weave Wire cloth shall be woven to produce uniform square apertures in
accordance with Clause 6.5.
Plain weave shall be used for wire cloth in test sieves with a nominal aperture size of
75 µm and greater, and either plain or twilled weave for wire cloth with apertures of
63 µm and smaller.
The wire shall be crimped before weaving for wire cloth with aperture sizes of 4 mm and
greater.
6.4 Mounting The wire cloth shall be mounted in the frame in such a way that it will
be held firmly and equally taut in all directions without distortion of the mesh.
6.5 Aperture size tolerances The aperture size shall be measured on the centre-lines
of the aperture in both the warp and the weft direction, as illustrated in Figure 4.

COPYRIGHT
AS 1152— 1993 8

When tested in accordance with Appendix B, the aperture size before the test sieve is used
shall comply with the tolerances listed in Table B1, as follows:
(a) Maximum tolerance for size of an individual aperture —no aperture size shall exceed
the nominal value by more than the tolerance X.
(b) Average aperture size—the average aperture size shall not differ from the nominal
value by more than the tolerance Y.
(c) Intermediate tolerance for size of an individual aperture—Not more than six percent
of apertures shall exceed the nominal value by more than the tolerance Z.

FIGURE 4 MEASUREMENT OF WOVEN WIRE APERTURE SIZE

NOTE: No tolerance on perpendicularity of warp and weft wires is specified in this Standard
since users’ requirements may differ according to the material to be tested. A tolerance of ±3°
from perpendicular is acceptable in many cases, and a visual inspection of general appearance
of perpendicularity may be acceptable in other cases. The test for perpendicularity should apply
to the general directions of the warp and weft wires over several apertures and not to a single
aperture.
6.6 Inspection The test sieve manufacturer shall thoroughly examine each test sieve by
eye for faults as follows:
(a) Obvious faults such as weaving defects, loose wires, creases or wrinkles.
(b) Oversize apertures.
Test sieves having any of these faults shall be rejected.

7 PERFORATED PLATES IN TEST SIEVES

aperture size range where brass may be more suitable. Materials to be used in perforated
plates are not specified in this Standard (see Appendix A).
7.2 Arrangement of square holes Square holes shall be arranged in line with the
centre points at the vertices of squares, as shown in Figure 5.
7.3 Arrangement of round holes Round holes shall be arranged with the centres at the
apices of equilateral triangles, as shown in Figure 6.
7.4 Plate thickness Perforated plates shall be of uniform thickness and shall lie within
the range given in Table C1 of Appendix C.
NOTE: The nominal plate thicknesses stated in Table C1 are preferred.

FIGURE 5 ARRANGEMENT OF SQUARE HOLES

FIGURE 6 ARRANGEMENT OF ROUND HOLES

7.5 Pitch The nominal pitch is shown in Table C1. The pitch shall not be more than
15 percent larger than the nominal pitch. It may be smaller than the nominal pitch
provided that individual bridge widths comply with Clause 7.6.
7.6 Bridge width Minimum bridge widths shall comply with Table C1. No individual
bridge shall be less than half of the width obtained by subtracting the nominal aperture
size from the nominal pitch.

COPYRIGHT
AS 1152— 1993 10

7.7 Punching Perforated plates shall be uniformly and cleanly punched. The radius at
the corners of square holes shall not exceed 0.05 W ±0.30 mm, where W is the aperture
size expressed in millimetres.

uppermost, i.e. burred face down.
The crevices above and below the plate at its junction with its frame shall be filled and
left smooth.
7.9 Tolerances on aperture size Each aperture size of a test sieve shall comply with
the nominal size of the test sieve within the limits of tolerance shown in Table C1.
NOTE: Aperture size is measured on the centre-lines of square holes (see Clause 7.2) and on
the diameter of round holes (see Clause 7.3).
7.10 Inspection The test sieve manufacturer shall thoroughly examine each test sieve
by eye for faults as follows:
(a) Obvious faults such as irregularly formed holes, ragged edges or upward-facing
burrs.
(b) Oversize apertures.
Test sieves having any of these faults shall be specified in the report.

APPENDIX B
TEST PROCEDURE FOR WOVEN WIRE CLOTH TEST SIEVES
(Normative)

B1 SCOPE This Appendix sets out the procedure for the inspection of woven wire test
sieves.

B2 TEST PROCEDURE Every aperture in the metal wire cloth of a test sieve shall be
inspected for compliance with the requirements listed in Clause 6.
Where a test sieve has 20 apertures or less, all apertures shall be measured. In other cases,
the examination shall proceed in stages from a survey of general condition to a
methodical scrutiny of individual apertures, and finally to measurement of aperture size
for compliance with the tolerances.
Aperture size (see Paragraphs B3, B4 and B5) shall be measured accurately on equipment
within a precision of at least 2.5 µm or one tenth of the intermediate tolerance for the
nominal aperture concerned, whichever is greater.

B3 GENERAL EXAMINATION View the test sieve cloth against a uniformly

illuminated background. If obvious deviations from the requirements of Clause 6 are
found, for example weaving defects, creases, wrinkles or foreign matter in the cloth, the
test sieve shall be rejected.

B4 OVERSIZE APERTURES Carefully and methodically examine the appearance of

all openings, to detect oversize apertures. Apertures having width deviation of about
10 percent of the average value are apparent to the unaided eye of a skilled observer. This
method, known as the ‘handicap method’, will readily detect all oversize apertures
exceeding the average value by 10 percent or more. At the same time it is easy to detect
sequences of large apertures and local irregularities in the weaving.
If one aperture is found to be oversize by more than the maximum permissible deviation X
(see Table B1), the test sieve shall be rejected.

B5 VARIATIONS OF APERTURE SIZE Count the apertures having a width

between the limits of ‘nominal + Z’ and ‘nominal + X’ (see Clause 6.5) and determine
their proportion of the total number of apertures. If there are more than is permitted, the
test sieve shall be rejected.

B6 AVERAGE SIZE OF APERTURE After a test sieve has been found acceptable by
the above tests, measurements of the average size of aperture shall be made of sample
regions. These average values shall lie within the limits given in Table B1.
The sizes of at least 10 apertures shall be measured in each direction in each of at least
two positions on the cloth. If the results from the two positions require different
tolerances, and if they contradict the information given in Table B1, the average sizes at
more positions on the cloth shall be checked.

TEST PROCEDURE FOR PERFORATED PLATE TEST SIEVES
(Normative)

C1 SCOPE This Appendix sets out the procedure for the inspection of perforated plate
test sieves.

C2 TEST PROCEDURE Every aperture in the perforated plate in a test sieve shall be
inspected for compliance with the requirements listed in Clause 7.
An examination is made of the general condition of the perforated plate, followed by a
methodical examination of individual apertures and finally measurements of individual
aperture size are taken.
NOTE: Calipers, tapered plate gauges, segmental plain limit plug gauges, or optical projection
may be used for size determination.

C3 GENERAL EXAMINATION Each aperture and each pitch shall be carefully and
methodically examined for uniformity against an illuminated background. If obvious faults
are found, the test sieve shall be rejected.

C4 MEASUREMENT OF APERTURES The dimensions of the apertures shall be

checked, over any selected area of the test sieve plate, along two straight lines in different
directions, each of at least 100 mm in length and including at least five holes along each
direction.
The angle between the two straight lines shall be as follows:
(a) For round holes—90° or 60° (see Figure C1).
(b) For square holes either—
(i) 90° (see Figure C2); or
(ii) a single direction following the diagonal of the holes, for at least 15 cm and
including at least 8 holes (see Figure C3).

SQUARE HOLES (OPTION (ii))

If the minimum number of holes prescribed for examination in one or both directions is
not available in the plate, all the holes in the test sieve shall be checked.
If one aperture is oversize by more than the maximum tolerance as listed in Table C1, the
test sieve shall be rejected.

C5 EXAMINATION OF THE PITCH OF THE APERTURE The pitch of the

apertures shall be checked. This can be done at the same time as measuring for aperture
size.

C6 PLATE THICKNESS The thickness of the plate shall be measured for compliance
with Tables C1 or C2, as appropriate.
C7 REPORT The manufacturer shall test each test sieve before sale and supply a
record card. In addition, the manufacturer shall carry out regular quality control tests on
test sieves in accordance with Appendix C, to ensure compliance with Clause 7. A typical

APPENDIX D
CALIBRATION TESTS
(Informative)

D1 SCOPE This Appendix sets out the procedure for obtaining the detailed
information about the woven wire cloth or perforated plate required to calibrate a test
sieve.

D2 WOVEN WIRE CLOTH TEST SIEVES Measurement of the average aperture

width is made in a number of fields evenly spread over the whole area of the test sieve,
and so chosen that no two fields are crossed by the same wire (see Figure D1). The
number of fields and the minimum number of apertures to be measured in each field of a
200 mm diameter test sieve frame, in both the warp and the weft direction separately, are
given in Table D1.

FIGURE D1 FIELDS OF MEASUREMENT IN A 200 mm ROUND TEST SIEVE

In the cases of 100 mm and 300 mm diameter test sieve frames, the number of fields for
measurement are 4 and 15 respectively.

D3 PERFORATED PLATE TEST SIEVES When more detailed information is

required about the apertures in the perforated plate in a test sieve, additional
measurements should be carried out in accordance with Table D1.
NOTE: Apertures should be checked by limit gauging or the dimensions of apertures should be
measured directly.

D4 CHECKING WITH A REFERENCE SAMPLE Test sieves can be checked by

sieving known material and comparing the amount of residue on the test sieve with that
expected. Known material can be either—
(a) reference material with agreed particle size distribution; or
(b) a material that has been sieved on a set of master test sieves reserved for this
checking operation.
NOTE: For information on the availability of materials with known particle size characteristics,

APPENDIX E
MAINTENANCE OF TEST SIEVES
(Informative)

E1 SCOPE This Appendix provides a guide for ensuring that the performance
requirements of test sieves are maintained.

E2 MAINTENANCE
E2.1 General The sizes and tolerances in this Standard apply to new test sieves. With
continued use, test sieves will wear; it is therefore necessary for the apertures to be
remeasured from time to time.
If the user is not equipped to make such periodic re-inspections, recourse may be made to
specialists in testing.
E2.2 Wear allowances The tolerances on test sieve apertures are determined by the
degree of closeness to nominal values attainable in current manufacturing practice.
Increases in aperture size (due to wear) which may be acceptable in service are
determined by the requirements of the product, and may well be included in the product
specification. They are not necessarily the same as the manufacturing tolerance.
E2.3 Cleaning Before each use, the sieving medium and frame should be inspected
and cleaned if necessary. The test sieve should be cleaned with great care so that the
sieving medium is not damaged. The sieving medium should not be touched with the
fingers.
Occasionally, test sieves may be washed in warm water containing a liquid synthetic
detergent. After washing, the test sieves should be rinsed thoroughly in water and dried at
a temperature not exceeding 110°C. It is important to note that test sieves should not be
heated to high temperature. The test sieves may be cleaned by immersing upside-down in
a suitable liquid, e.g. alcohol or water in an ultrasonic bath and treated for 15 s to 20 s
with a frequency not less than 30 kHz and power input not exceeding 60 W/L.
Wire mesh test sieves, particularly those with a nominal aperture size smaller than
3.35 mm, may be brushed or cleaned with compressed air, provided that care is taken not
to damage the sieving medium.

E3 REJECTION OF SIEVES When the apertures of a test sieve no longer comply

with the appropriate tolerances according to the marking on the label of the test sieve
frame (see Clause 6.5), the test sieve should be discarded.
