The Sesotec metal detector works with the so-called "balanced coil" principle:
The transmitter winding in the search coil creates a high-frequency electromagnetic field, which is re-
ceived by symmetrically placed receiver windings. The windings are connected against each other;
when undisturbed, the system is in balance.

An electrically conductible object within the detection area disrupts this balance, and the electronics
unit creates a switching signal.
A "learning process” makes it possible to suppress the conductivity of the product itself. Deviations
from the taught-in product are usually caused by metal contaminants, which are detected by the sys-
tem with high precision.

The metal detector is equipped with comprehensive test and analysis software to ensure fault-free op-
eration and retracing of product errors.

Even with state-of-the-art technical features a 100% metal detection cannot be

guaranteed.

8.1 Checking the mechanical installation

• Make sure that the system is installed in a stable way and free from vibrations!

• Make sure that the metal-free zone of the metal detector is observed!
• Metal detectors with PRIMUS+ Control Unit are designed for in-house installation!
• Do not install the system in an Ex-protection zone!
• Do not install the metal detector in the vicinity of interference fields (e.g. large electric motors and fre-
quency converters)!

8.2 Commissioning, metal detector and separator with PRIMUS+ Control Unit
Commissioning can be started when the metal detector or separator has been properly installed and
mounted.
Every Sesotec metal detector is factory-preconfigured and immediately boots into its operating state.
Initial settings must then be performed as follows:

1. Make sure that nothing is still lying in the detection tunnel of the coil.
2. Make sure that the mains cable is plugged in and that the metal detector is supplied with power. If
the metal detector has been installed in combination with a conveyor belt, the metal detector can
be turned on with the corresponding control elements directly at the conveyor belt controller. The
metal detector will then boot up.
3. When the metal detector with PRIMUS+ Control Unit has booted up, the operating screen is dis-
played on the LCD graphic display, the "Operating / Fault" status LED lights up in green, and the
metal detector is ready for operation.
If a signal device is connected, the operating lamp lights up in green. Make sure that based on
these operating instructions you are familiar with the navigation and meaning of the menus at the
PRIMUS+ Control Unit.
4. With the current factory settings a Sesotec metal detector is able to detect metal parts.
For the size and type of metal parts please refer to the [Technical Data Sheet of the supplied
Sesotec metal detector/separator "Type"].

9. Operation of a metal detector with PRIMUS+ Control Unit

9 Operation of a metal detector with PRIMUS+ Control Unit

Metal detectors/separators with PRIMUS+ Control Unit are designed for the inspection of
bulk materials and piece goods in vacuum / pressure conveying applications, free-fall ap-
plications, and conveyor belt applications, and are used in the plastics, food, animal feed,
recycling, and chemical industries.

ATTENTION
The product to be inspected may have an intrinsic electric conductivity, which may cause a
metal signal when the product is conveyed through the detection coil. It is recommended to
follow the steps described below.
➢ Use the "Auto-Set" function to learn the product to be inspected and save it to a se-
lected product memory (4-10)
[see chapter 10.4.2 "Auto-Set"].
➢ After Auto-Set the product must not generate metal signals any more.
➢ The scanning sensitivity can be optimised with the "Sensitivity" and "Product angle"
product parameters.

Personnel qualification:
Sesotec metal detectors and separators only may be operated by reliable trained or instructed per-
sonnel. Knowledge of the operating instructions is not mandatory. Operating personnel must be able
to read and understand displays at the PRIMUS+ Control Unit.

A differentiation must be made between "Operation" and "Setup". The respective user rights are de-
fined in the "Setup levels" (Code xxxx).

Operation:
Operating personnel can be assigned the respective user right by setting a password (code no.).

9.1 Metal detector is on - start product inspection

When the Sesotec metal detector/separator has been started up and is ready for operation, product
conveying can be started.

1. You can use suitable metallic test bodies to check and verify metal detection. All the activities will
be entered in the logbook and can be viewed by using the corresponding menu.
2. The PRIMUS+ Control Unit offers several possibilities for optimising the detection sensitivity
[see chapter 10.4.3 "Product parameter"].
3. Every additional new product that should be inspected must be created as a new product.
4. If several products have already been learned and created, a short product change is enough for
the metal detector to automatically change to the selected product.

9.2 Product inspection - error display and signal devices

The PRIMUS+ Control Unit displays all the operating states such as "Metal detected" and "Error mes-
sages" on the LCD display. It is also possible to connect external error and signal devices (24VDC),
for example signal lamps and signal horns (parallel connection is possible).
Three outputs are available for this purpose:

Info:
1 Lamp Operation On Flashes On On
The "Lamp Operation" flashes as long as switching input "Deactivate metal detection" (J6 terminal 24-
32) is closed.

9.3 Product inspection - no metal detection

When the Sesotec metal detector or separator has been started up and a product has been learned,
relevant metal contaminations must be detected when the product is conveyed.
If there is no metal detection, please check the following.

1. Are external functions ignored, e.g. switching input "Deactivate metal detection" closed.
2. Check whether an error message is shown on the LCD display.
3. Check the product settings, using the operating instructions.
4. Learn the product anew.
5. Change to product no. 11, product B (factory setting)
6. In case of conveyor belt application check the product sequence.
7. Check the conveying speed (must match the set range).

If you have performed all these measures and the metal detector with PRIMUS+ Control
Unit still does not detect relevant metal particles, please contact our Sesotec service.

9.4 Stop product inspection - turn off the metal detector

Metal detectors/separators with PRIMUS+ Control Unit can be disconnected from the mains without
any preparatory measures.

1. When the metal detector is turned off this will be entered in the logbook with date and time.
2. All the settings will be stored.
3. Date and time are battery-buffered.
4. When the metal detector is started again, the last used product parameters will be activated again.

- Cleaning agents that may attack the materials used
- Cleaning agents containing chlorine.

12.2.2 Cleaning instructions

For cleaning purposes we recommend that you use warm water with approved cleaning agents for the
respective application, and a soft, lint-free cloth. Once every week the coil shaft should be thoroughly
cleaned, removing any dirt accumulations and deposits. After cleaning wipe up any remaining drops of
water with a dry, non-fibrous cloth until the coil shaft is dry. From time to time apply oil to the stainless
steel framework (e.g. Nirostol 55 cleaning and maintenance oil which meets food industry standards).

12. Maintenance and cleaning

12.2.3 Care advice for stainless steel

Only high-quality stainless steel is used in the systems. To prevent rust on the high-grade steel parts
do not use substances containing chloride (e.g. cleaning or disinfecting products) or operate the ma-
chine in an atmosphere containing chloride. If this is unavoidable the steel parts must be thoroughly
rubbed down immediately afterwards with cleaning oil e.g. Nirostol 55 cleaning and maintenance oil
(which meets food industry standards).

Important information for stainless steel models.

Stainless steel models are extremely weatherproof and are therefore able to withstand most environ-
mental conditions.
However, even stainless steel can be susceptible to a slight film of rust.
These deposits are caused by contact corrosion and can be removed by following the instructions be-
low:
- Use a stainless steel cleaner: in principle any stainless steel cleaner may be used. Please ensure
you read the instructions prior to use.
- Use only cleaning agents that are halogen-free (i.e. without chlorides and fluorides), and salt and
hydrofluoric acid free.
- After each cleaning rinse the machine thoroughly with tap water.
- Do not use the following: Non-alloy materials or substances, abrasive cloths, cleaning agents con-
taining salt or hydrofluoric acid, chrome, silver or brass cleaners.
