Questions:
The rate of reaction with respect to the concentration of sodium thiosulphate (Na 2S2O3) is given by the
equation: rate = K [Na2S2O3] z where K is the rate constant and z is the order of the reaction. The rate
equation can be converted into a log form. Log rate= log K +z log [Na2S2O3]. The rate of reaction can be
represented by 1000/time and the concentration of Na2S2O3 can be represented as FA1.
1. How the depth of the solution is kept constant during the experiment?
The depth is kept constant by adding water as the volume of FA1 decreases. By doing so the
depth is kept constant at 50 cm3 . The volume by which FA1 decreases is the same amount by
which the volume of water increases by.
2. Explain why the volume of FA1 in each experiment is a measure of the Na2S2O3 concentration.
The volume is a measure of the concentration due to the fact that as the volume of FA1 or
Na2S2O3 decreases, it is diluted using water. Combined they have a total volume of 50 cm 3 . As
FA1 decreases the volume of water increases. This is a measure of concentration as the amount of
Na2S2O3 decreases whereas the total volume when accounting for FA1 and water is the same.
According to the graph, the order of the reaction with respect to sodium thiosulphate is first order
Conclusion:
In conclusion, the order of reaction with respect to the concentration of sodium thiosulphate is
first order
