DSG Well Planning
Module of DecisionSpace Geoscience to
quickly and effectively plan wells locations,
trajectories and completion intervals through
geoscience and drilling team collaboration
© 2018 Halliburton. All rights reserved. 23
- Different modes available: single and multi well planning, manual or automatic
- Interactive with guided steps
- Flexibile: mature, deep water, new venture and also unconventionals scenarios
- Planning methods similar to Compass
- Automation to reduce Well-Planning Cycle Time & optimize cost PRODUCTIVITY
- Redline parameters and basic anticollision evaluation, with report SAFETY
© 2018 Halliburton. All rights reserved. 24
Typical Collaborative workflow
- Use cultural info (GIS) > define lease boundaries and
surface hazards for sites/surface wells location
- Use G&G data (seismic, 3D grids, surface grids, faults) >
manually or automatically select targets and subsurface
hazards.
- Define pad/platform numbers and types (slot numbers and
costs)
Surface Fault
grids

- Define well trajectory (vertical/horizontal) with appropriate KOP, inclination, DLS, reach.
Manual or automatic set up with optimization
- Compare different scenarios solutions, estimating
costs
- Exchange information with EDM (Compass) to refine well trajectory, making the right decision.

Surveys and plans
Survey: drilled well with stations along MD
Plan: tentative well (principal or prototype) Survey errors
and cone of uncertainties
for each survey station
Survey tools: providing survey
measurements (MD, incl, azim)
at each survey stations while drilling.
Each tool has uncertainties for MD, incl,
azim (elliptical error around each station,
increasing with depth) impacting on Scanning
trajectory, geological target positioning and methods for
anticollision
anticollision (respect to offset wells).
Magnetic tools also affected by magnetic field > higher errors than gyros.
* well trajectory typically calculated using minimum curvature method as method of interpolation of survey
stations.

Main Drilling & Completions Challenges
▪ Survey uncertainties and Anti-Collision
▪ Avoid hazards (ie faults) and reach sweet spots with precision
▪ Plan Effective Wells: reduce footage, tortuosity and cost while increasing Coverage Factor
▪ Adhere to Drilling Constraints
(Reduce torque-drag> damage to drill strings and casing) well1 well2
▪ Avoid damage to formations and surface equipment Errors sum <
(pore pressure and fracture gradient control) centers distance
▪ Completions Efficiency (especially for injector wells)
Errors sum >
centers distance
Multilaterals and surface hazards Anticollision evaluation

Precision target
Assessing uncertainties to reach the drilling target
Geological target comes with:
- geophysical uncertainties (lateral and vertical due to TWT to
TVD conversion),
- pick uncertainties (in picking horizons and faults on the seismic)
- survey tool and geosteering errors
Hit probability at the corner points and at the planned
Geological target
penetration point.

Fast Track Well Planning offshore Borneo
▪ Over-pressurized environment with shallow
hazards and channels. Two prior drilling efforts by
another operator failed to reach the geological
target.
▪ Planning for the primary well location and six
geological sidetrack scenarios was accomplished
in a single day using DS Well Planning technology
▪ The well was drilled successfully without
operational problems, faster than anticipated and SPE-182449-MS
under budget. Fast Track Well Planning in Borneo
“In terms of well planning, deepwater wells require at least 12 to 18
months of lead time before execution. Therefore, it is phenomenal
that the operator successfully delivered its first fast track
deepwater exploration well in less than two months, from
planning to spud.”

Collaborative Well Solution Offshore South America
Optimized trajectory combining:
- geoscience knowledge (better location of formation tops>avoiding potentially unstable intervals)
- drilling knowledge (producing a wellbore smooth enough to enable future interventions,
avoiding the use of one additional casing string)

Optimize Relief Well Designs in Gulf of Mexico
The US government requires operators to submit 2 complete
relief well plans to obtain a deepwater drilling permit.
Generation of hundreds of scenarios in a mere half hour or less
in a deepwater subsalt scenario

Using DSWP as part of RTOC
Challenges:
- NPT (wellbore stability, stuck pipe, sidetrack issues)
often accounts for up to 40% of total well costs
- G&G and Drilling not talking to each other
Real Time Operation Center at Repsol using DSWP
and Engineering Notes to generates a three-day
drilling hazard forecast to support teams monitoring
real-time operations.
