Time: 2½ hours Full Marks: 80


This Question Paper has four printed pages.
Answers must be written in the script/s provided. You will not be allowed to write for the
first 15 minutes. This time must be spent in reading the Question Paper.
The time given at the head of this Paper is the time allowed for writing answers.

This Paper is divided into two sections.


Answer all the questions of Section A and any four of Section B.
All working, including rough work, must be done and clearly shown in the
right-hand margin of the page containing the answer. Omission of any essential
working will result in deduction of marks.
Maximum marks for a question or part of a question are given in brackets [ ].

SECTION A (40 marks)

Answer all the questions.

1. (a) Solve and represent on the number line: [3]

(b) The vertices of a triangle are A(2, 4) , B(–3, 1) and C(4, –7). Find the slope of: [3]
(i) side AB, (ii) the median through B.

(c) If (x + 1) and (x – 2) are factors of the polynomial x3 + mx2 + 2x + n, find the values of
m and n. [4]

2. (a) Determine the values of p for which the given quadratic equation has real roots: [3]
5px2 – 8x + 2 = 0

(b) A model of a ship is made to a scale of 1:160. Find: [3]


(i) the length of the ship, if the length of the model is 1.2m,
(ii) the area of the deck of the ship, if the area of the deck of the model is 1.2m2.

(c) If (2y + 3x) : (3y + 5x) = 18:29, find x3: y3. [4]

3. (a) Without using trigonometric tables, evaluate: [3]

(b) The diameter of a roadroller, 1m 40 cm long is 80 cm. If it takes 6000 revolutions
to level a playground, find the cost of levelling the ground at the rate of `75 per
square metre. [3]

(c) Calculate the mean of the following data (use the shortcut method):

Write the answer correct to two places of decimal. [ 4]

4. (a) A man has a recurring deposit account in a bank for 3 years at 9·5% p.a. At the
time of maturity he gets `16509. Find the monthly instalment. [3]

(b) Which term of the arithmetic progression 5, 15, 25, …. will be 130 more than its
31st term? [3]

(c) A In the given figure, O is the centre and AB is a


diameter of the circle. Also, DO is parallel to CB

5. (a) If a:b = c:d, show that:

(a – c) b2 : (b – d)cd = (a2 – b2 – ab) : (c2 – d2 – cd) [3]

(b) If cosecθ – sinθ = a and secθ – cosθ = b, show that: [3]

(c) Use graph paper for this question: [4]


(i) Plot A(3, 2) and B(5, 4).

(ii) Reflect A and B in the x-axis to A′ and B′ and plot A′, B′.

(iii) Complete the figure and write down the geometrical name of ABB′A′.

(iv) Write down the equation of the axis of symmetry of ABB′A′.

6. (a) Solve for x: [3]

7. (a) A card is drawn at random from a well-shuffled deck of 52 playing cards. Find the
probability that it is: [3]

(i) a jack of hearts.

(ii) neither a 4 nor a club.

(iii) either a 10 or a spade.

(b) Prove that an isosceles trapezium is always cyclic. [3]

(c) P is the solution set of –3x + 4 < 2x –3, x∈N. Q is the solution set of
4x –5 < 12, x∈W. Find Q – P and represent it on the number line. [4]

8. (a) The remainder obtained by dividing kx2 – 3x + 6 by x – 2 is twice the remainder that is
obtained by dividing 3x2 + 5x – k by x + 3. Find the value of k. [3]

(b) In ∆ABC, PQ is a line segment which intersects AB at P and AC at Q such that PQ is parallel
to BC. PQ divides ∆ABC into two parts which are equal in area. Find BP . [3]

(c) A cone is divided into two parts by a plane parallel to the base and which passes through
the mid-point of its axis. Compare the volumes of the two parts into which the plane
divides the cone. [4]

9. (a) Prove that:


(sinA + cosecA)2 + (cosA + secA)2 = tan2 A + cot2A + 7 [3]

(b) Find the equation of the line which passes through the point (–4, 3) and is such that
the portion of it between the axes is divided by the point in the ratio 5 : 3. [3]

(c) A two-digit number has the smaller of the two digits in the unit’s place. The product
of the digits is 24 and the difference between the digits is 5. Find the number. [4]

10. (a) Find the sum of all natural numbers between 250 and 1000 which are exactly
divisible by 3. [4]

Draw an ogive for the data taking 2 cm = `10 and 2 cm = 40 workers. From the
ogive estimate:
(i) the median wage.
(ii) the upper quartile wage earned by the workers. [6]

11. (a) Cards numbered from 2 to 25 are put in a box and mixed thoroughly. One card is
drawn at random. Find the probability that the number on the card is:
(i) not a prime number.
(ii) a perfect square.
(iii) a number divisible by both 2 and 3. [3]
