Synthaprufe

Product Data Sheet

May 2002

Synthaprufe is a cold-applied bituminous emulsion, containing synthetic rubber latex which, once applied, dries
to provide a waterproof and vapour resistant, black flexible film. Synthaprufe has excellent resistance to
sulphates and other soil salts. When suitably protected, Synthaprufe will be effective through the life of the
building. Synthaprufe bonds with great strength to a range of building materials.

Features and Benefits

 Completely waterproof
Remaining effective for the life of the structure
 Cold-applied, easy to apply
Flexible — withstands normal building movement
 Forms a seamless membrane
Can be applied to damp surfaces
 Sulphate resistant
 Water based, solventless
Compatible, when cured, with all Ruberoid High Performance DPCs and most other materials

Standards
Synthaprufe is designed to give a minimum dried film thickness of 1mm for waterproofing applications. The
quality assurance system used to control the production is registered as complying with BS EN ISO 9002.

Applications
Synthaprufe will provide a damp proof membrane when applied to concrete, brick, skimmed blockwork and masonry.
Synthaprufe may also be used as an adhesive for unsealed wood block or cork.

Sitework

Synthaprufe must be stirred before and occasionally during use, and spread using a brush. Application should
be even and in one direction. Synthaprufe should not be worked like paint. Total thickness of dried coats should
be a minimum of 1.0 mm.

It is recommended that two brushes are used, keeping one in cold water while using the other. Switch every 5 to
10 minutes and shake brushes free of water.

When the application is complete, wet brushes can be cleaned by rinsing with cold water. Dried film can be
removed by soaking the brushes in white spirit. The brushes should be dried before any further use.
Splashes of Synthaprufe should be removed immediately with a damp cloth. Dried film is extremely difficult to
remove.

Floor Finishes
Final coat of Synthaprufe should be blinded with clean sharp sand while tacky. A minimum 50mm sand cement
protection screed must be applied prior to any surface finishes being installed.

In situations where hydrostatic pressure may be present, please consult Ruberoid.

Drying Time
As a guide Synthaprufe will dry in approximately 6 hours under good drying conditions. Low temperatures and
high humidity will increase drying time. Increased heating and forced ventilation will improve the drying process.
Moisture in the substrate, air movement, relative humidity and temperature all affect drying.
A simple test is to rub lightly with a wet finger onto the film; no pick-up of Synthaprufe means the film is dry.

Precautions
Synthaprufe should not be applied at temperatures below 5°C, or when temperatures can be expected to fall
below 5°C before the membrane has dried. At high temperatures, on porous surfaces, the surface should be
dampened with clean water, or a priming coat of 1 part Synthaprufe to 6 parts water should be applied.
Synthaprufe must not be applied during rainfall or when rain is expected before the membrane has dried.

Internal Plaster Finishes

The final coat of Synthaprufe should be blinded with clean sharp sand while tacky. When fully dry a minimum
12mm thickness of a gypsum plaster system should be applied. Do not use cementitious-based plasters or
renders.

Storage and Shelf Life

Synthaprufe has a shelf life of 12 months when stored in sealed containers at temperatures of 5 to 25°C.
Synthaprufe must not be stored in conditions under 5°C.
