Health and Safety

• The International Labour Organization


demands that workers must be able to work
productively without suffering injuries from
wealth-generating activities in any industry

• According the ILO, at least 60 000 fatal


accidents occur each year on construction sites
around the world, representing one fatal
accident every 10 minutes

• Construction accounts for one in every six fatal


accidents recorded at work annually
(International Labour Organization).

• The ILO estimates that the construction sector


accounts for between 25% and 40% of work-
related deaths.

• The ILO further estimates that 30% of


construction workers suffer from back pain or
other musculoskeletal disorders.

• These shocking statistics necessitated a


determined and coordinated effort mitigate
accidents, death rates to improve health and
safety in the construction sector

OHS Act 85 of 1993

• The Occupational Health and Safety


(OHS) Act 85 of 1993 seeks to protect
the well-being of workers.

• The Act is a proactive attempt by the


government to prevent and avoid work-
related injuries and illnesses.

• It promotes the health and safety of


workers in South African industries
OHS Act 85 of 1993

The OHS Act is enforced by the Department of


Labour, whose inspectors may:

• enter any workplace without prior notice;

• request for any document;

• inspect any condition, process, plant;

• question or summon any person within the workplace.

regulations

• to ensure we do not endanger our lives and


the lives of colleagues on a construction
project

• wearing PPE and complying with supervisors’


instructions increases awareness and safe
practices

Conclusion

• H&S policies and compliance would help to


mitigate workplace accidents and deaths

their H&S roles in ensuring a safe working
environment
