Project 1 2021 V2

This document outlines the requirements for Project 1 in a sediment transport course. Students must complete a literature review on a topic of sediment transport, selecting from options provided or an approved topic of their choice. The review should be less than 15 pages and include at least 3 sources. It will be graded on ability to summarize information coherently, clarity of concepts, depth of analysis, and inclusion of different types of materials.

PROJECT 1: Literature review on a specific topic of sediment transport

Due: Friday, November 5, 2021

In this Project 1, the objective is for you to develop a literature review, a critical analysis and a
write-up, based on some existing papers, book chapters, or any other pertinent material, regarding a
topic of sediment transport. The idea is to select a topic, synthetize the knowledge, and produce a
report about it. Please start doing a search on your own on the Internet and discuss with me the
suitability of certain sources.

In what follows, please find a list of possible topics for your project:

1) Alluvial fans. Phenomenology and modeling.

2) Formation of submarine canyons. Density currents.
3) Bend sorting.
4) General sorting in rivers.
5) One-dimensional sediment transport models. Theory and numerical aspects.
6) Two-dimensional sediment transport models. Theory and numerical aspects.
7) Sediment transport of mixtures (i.e., multiple particle sizes).
8) Formation of meanders.
9) Sorting due to river dunes and deltas.
10) Scour at in-stream structures.
11) Techniques for river restoration and sediment transport. Pools and riffles.
12) Sediment transport as a two-phase flow.

1
Please let me know about the topic of your choice as soon as possible. If you have a particular
topic of your interest and you would like to pursue it, please do not hesitate to talk to me. Please act
immediately selecting the topic.
The final write-up needs to be shorter than 15 pages, including figures and equations, and 1.5
space among lines. Font should be New Times Roman, 12 pt. It has to include at least three
sources of information.
Grading will be based on the following criteria:
a) Ability to summarize different pieces of information in a coherent way. Rather than
describing what each author/s did, please concentrate on providing an overarching message.
Please do not structure the paper with sections on each contribution.
b) Clarity of the presentation of concepts.
c) Extension and depth in the analysis of collected material.
d) Inclusion of material according to theory, laboratory experiments and field work.

Convenient deadlines

Based on experience, I include some deadlines to check the progress. These are as follows:

1) Please submit the topic of your project to [email protected] no later than

Friday, October 1, 2021.
2) Please submit the content of your report to [email protected] no later than
Friday, October 8, 2021.
3) Please submit the first draft of your report to [email protected] no later than
Tuesday, October 26, 2021.
4) After feedback, please submit the final report to [email protected] no later
than Friday, November 5, 2021.
