THE DATA TEAM
What if we think of different data roles working
together in a kitchen to prepare a Michelin-star dish?
KITCHEN ROLE
The "Purchaser". Brings the
'ingredients' (data) to the 'kitchen'
DATA ENGINEER
(data infrastructure), making sure it's
ready and organized
The "Prep Cook". Prepares the
ANALYTICS ENGINEER ingredients, making data tidy and
ready for analysis
The "Line Cook". Uses the prepared
DATA ANALYST data to create simple 'dishes' (reports
and analyses)
The "Head Chef" who creates complex
DATA SCIENTIST 'dishes' (models and predictions) from
the prepared ingredients
DATA CAREER ROLES
Here's a brief description of a business problem that
each data role might typically address:
BUSINESS PROBLEM EXAMPLE
Determining why sales have dropped
in the last quarter. You will use tools
like SQL and Excel to manipulate and
DATA ANALYST
analyze existing data, and then create
reports or dashboards to
communicate your findings.
Creating new data models with a tool
called DBT to make it easier for data
ANALYTICS ENGINEER analysts and data scientists to do their
jobs. You'll focus on scalability and
optimization.
Integrating data from various sources
into a single, easily accessible data
DATA ENGINEER warehouse using Python. You'll be
designing and maintaining the
systems that store and process data.
Predicting future sales trends based
on complex patterns in historical data.
You'll utilize Python, machine
DATA SCIENTIST learning models and advanced
statistical techniques to predict future
events or understand complex
behaviors.
DATA CAREER JOURNEY
Generally, the Data Analyst (DA) role is considered the most
entry-level position among the ones listed. It typically requires
less advanced technical skills compared to the other roles and
is a good starting point for those interested in working with
data.
Analytics Engineers (AE) is a new role in the data world and
is less competitive compared to other roles. Similar to DAs,
AEs work with just a few tools and this can be a good entry-
level position as well, although a bit more technical and is
more suited for someone who wants to grow into a Data
Engineer in the future.
In comparison, Data Engineers and Data Scientists roles
usually require more advanced technical skills and
experience. For example, Data Engineers often need
knowledge in cloud platforms and programming languages
like Python. Data Scientists, in addition to these, typically
require understanding of advanced statistical methods and
machine learning techniques.
However, it's important to note that the requirements can vary
widely between companies. Some companies may hire entry-
level Data Engineers or Data Scientists, but the skills and
qualifications required are generally higher than for a Data
Analyst or Analytics Engineer role.
