It was near perfect weather for the
38th annual iteration of the Kemper Clas-
sic. The parking lot at Big League Dreams
in Chino was packed and guests were
treated to plenty of camaraderie, amazing
station uniforms and spectacular raffle
prizes. This year’s event was as large as
any in recent memory with 29 teams com-
peting and plenty of family and friends in
attendance.
In addition to several sponsors
for the event, the Injury Prevention Unit
was there, and trainer Sean Higgs was
kept busy all day. Rumor has it that a few
shoulders wandered out of place and Sean
was offering a special on hamstring treat-
ment.
Lane Kemper, for whom the tour-
nament is named, served the LAFD for 30
years with distinction. He was a subject
matter expert in forcible entry, a distin-
guished officer and an avid philanthro-
pist for the Relief Association. He is said
to have raised over a million dollars for
the Widows, Orphans, and Disabled Fire-
fighters Fund over his career; through
events like “Bats and Beer” (the former
name of the annual softball tournament),
large scale fire department musters and
sporting events of all kind. Lane’s father
had served as an LA City fireman, but af-
ter an off-duty injury, he was not able to
complete a full career for the LAFD. The
Kemper family benefited from the faithful
and compassionate support of the Relief
Association, and it would prove to be one
of Lane’s passions during his life to “pay
it forward.”
Lane’s original vision was to gather
members from neighboring stations to get
together and enjoy some competition and

fellowship. Over the years this grew into
a tournament held at multiple venues in
the Valley. The current version, held well
outside of the city, seems to serve players
and families alike with comfort and con-
venience.
They say that pitching and defense
wins championships - that was true this
year as Fire Station 29s, the “Kings of K-
Town,” took their third Kemper Classic
Championship in a row. Sal Manzo toed
the slab for 29s, and with solid defense
behind him, allowed only three runs all
day. The finals would pit them against
Fire Station 66’s “Slauson Slugs” and
with Claudio Fluxa’s steady presence in
the center of the field, the championship
game lived up to expectations. The Slugs
had the bases loaded with two out in their
last at bat, but their offense was no match
for Manzo’s vicious sinker. He induced a
pop up to win 3-1 and claim the 2024 title.
Even more important than the
Championship, all in attendance enjoyed
a great day away from the fire station, cel-
ebrating camaraderie and fun.
Many thanks to the whole team
from the Relief – President Chris Stine,
members of the executive board, Valerie
Lawrence, Diane Vigil and her army of
LAFD widows, Juliet Brandolino and her
squad for not only their support and atten-
dance but their tireless work of planning,
set up and break down. Thanks to UFLAC
president Freddie Escobar for attending
and cheering as well.
Next year’s event will look to con-
tinue the trend, so oil up your glove and
hit the batting cages, and we will see you
next year.

In 1967, the Los Angeles City Fire-
fighters Association instituted the “An-
nual Firefighter of The Year” luncheon.
This annual event recognizes members of
the Association who have gone above and
beyond the call of duty for our members.
Over half a century has now passed, and
since then, over 50 well-deserving mem-
bers have been chosen for this prestigious
award.
The Los Angeles City Firefighters
Association (LAFFA) has been the local
and state representative for our members
for 100 years. Their mission since 1924
has been dedicated to the personal and
professional success of its members and
to improve the quality of their lives and
that of future generations.
This year, while celebrating their
100-year anniversary, the Los Angeles
Firefighters Association has selected a
new venue for the Firefighter of the Year
Event. On April 18, 2024, at the Universal
Hilton Hotel in Universal City, California,
friends, family, and colleagues gathered
to celebrate the 2024 recipient—Captain
II Richard Moody.

award—Captain II Richard Moody.
A humbled Captain Moody stepped
up to the podium and began by thanking
all in attendance for their presence and
for playing an important role in his de-
velopment as an LA City Firefighter. Rich
spoke of his grandfather, who joined the
LAPD after WWII, his three sons, two of
whom became LAPD officers, and a third,
Ken Moody, who served with the LAFD
for over 35 years. Ken was Rich’s father,
and a person who seemed larger than life
to him as he would often visit his father at
the fire station. Rich thanked his father for
showing him “how cool an A/O could be.”
Rich was also proud of his mother, who
worked for the Downey and Tustin Police
Department for over 20 years, finger-
printing arrestees and working the front
desk. Rich continued by praising those
from whom he witnessed and absorbed
firefighting skills: Bruce Gallen, Craig
White, Rob Caropino, Robert Nelson, and
Jerry Bedoya to name a few. Rich would
go on to speak of his time on the job and
his assignments, but he would end with
what was most important to him—his
family. He finished by saying, “Without a
doubt, I could not give my all to this City
without absolute support from family at
home. My wife, Erin, and daughter, Mara,
have been incredibly supportive of my ca-

Congratulations to Firefighter Brenda

completing her Engineer practical assessment!
Feedback suggests that she demonstrated ex-

firefighting prowess, her thoughtful gesture

California Police Athletic Federation Debuts Ultimate Firefighter at
2024 US Police & Fire Championships
-The California based organization announces the debut of the Ultimate Firefighter competition in the
2024 US Police & Fire Championships happening June 8 – 15, 2024 in San Diego -

The California Police Athletic Federation (CPAF), a non-profit organization committed to promoting sport
and physical fitness among first responders, is excited to announce the debut of Ultimate Firefighter at
the 2024 US Police & Fire Championships (USPFC) taking place June 8 – 15 in San Diego. This is the first
time that the Ultimate Firefighter competition will be offered at the USPFC and is part of CPAF’s goal to
offer more fire-specific events to the new demographic of first responders, volunteer and parttime
firefighters, who were included in the recent expansion of eligibility requirements.

“We are thrilled to introduce the Ultimate Firefighter competition to our 2024 games in San Diego,” said
Jim King, Vice President of the California Police Athletic Federation. “Although Ultimate Firefighter has
been hosted at the World Police & Fire Games for decades, we are excited to grow the opportunities
and events available to our dedicated athletes at the US Police & Fire Championships. In past years, we
have hosted events that catered to law enforcement officials, so we are happy to debut this remarkable
competition for our active, retired and volunteer firefighters from across the nation.”

Ultimate Firefighter is comprised of 4 consecutive stages including a Hose Task, Weight and Strength,
Obstacle Course and High Rise. The competition will allow fire personnel to showcase their skills through
a series of physical and mental challenges that mimic real-life firefighting situations. Competing athletes
will not only hone in on their firefighting skills and technique but will improve their physical fitness and
enhance their problem-solving abilities.

Founded in 1967, CPAF has historically hosted Olympic-style games to promote physical fitness and
camaraderie among members of predominantly

welcome in more members of the firefighter community after expanding eligibility to volunteer and part
time firefighters in 2023 and through the debut of Ultimate Firefighter. Ultimate Firefighter has received
tremendous support and success at the World Police & Fire Games for the last decade and CPAF is
excited to introduce the competition at the 2024 USPFC.

This year’s USPFC will take place from Saturday, June 8 to Saturday, June 15 in San Diego and feature
athletes competing in over 35 sports across 30 venues in the greater San Diego County. The Ultimate
Firefighter portion of the games will take place on Saturday, June 8 at the Heartland Fire Training
Facility. The event is open to active, retired and volunteer personnel from eligible agencies and athletes
can compete in both individual and team style competitions. To learn more about the California Police

Heli Expo 2024

The LAFD Historical Society partici-

pated in Heli–Expo 2024 at the Anaheim Con-
vention Center this past February. An annual
event that rotates through different venues
within the United States. We attended the last
one in 2020, and it came around earlier this
year. It normally rotates back to California ap-
proximately every six years instead of four.
After speaking with an official from the event,
I was told that the one in Anaheim has the
greatest attendance out of all the other loca-
tions. More shows may be coming to Southern
California. We trailered the museum’s Bell 47
helicopter to the event.
So, what’s Heli-Expo? Picture the L.A.
Auto Show, but its helicopters and all the re-
lated accessories and equipment. People in
the industry come from all over the world to
attend the four-day trade show. The event is
sponsored by HAI-Helicopter Association In-
ternational. However, they recently changed
their name to VAI, Vertical Association Inter-
national. On Display at Heli-Expo 2024

About the LAFDHS Bell 47 Helicopter

The Bell 47 G3B-1 was manufactured
in 1962 before entering service with the LAFD
at a cost of $67,000. It is powered by a Lycom-
ing six cylinder 270-horsepower turbo super-
charged piston engine. The Bell 47 carried
a 105 Gallon water tank and had a range of
245 miles. Jeff Moir, our retired LAFD heli-
copter pilot and A&P mechanic performed the
restoration with a little help from the LAFD
paint shop. Jeff’s hard work and impeccable
attention to detail produced a flawless restora-
tion that matched or exceeded the quality of
the original equipment manufacturer. The he-
licopter is completely operable and is started
and warmed up on a regular basis where it’s
kept at LAFD Air Operations. We do not fly it
however, mainly because the insurance is very
expensive for a non-profit like the LAFDHS,
and the city misplaced the records when the
helicopter was taken out of service in the late
70s. Because of this, we do not know the hours
on any of the components. To get around, we

Heli-Expo learned how to fly on the Bell 47.
It was very interesting as a layman to hear
their stories of learning how to master flying
a helicopter, and their love for the Bell 47. For
some, it was like reuniting with an old friend.
We didn’t hear one negative thing about this
iconic aircraft from the people who operated
it. Not one. Can’t really say that about another
widely used platform that’s currently in use by
the civilian helicopter training industry today.
