Here is a full view of the symphony orchestra with all the families of instruments
1. String family:
a) Bowed string instruments , violin, viola , violoncello, contrabass.
In this type of instrument, sound is obtained by rubbing the strings with
a bow.

b) Plucked string instrument: Harp.

In this instrument the sound is produced by plucking the strings with the
fingers.

c) Struck string instruments: piano,( grand piano) and upright piano)

This instrument produce sound when small hammers strike the strings,
triggered by a keyboard

2.- Wind family: A. Woodwind section and B, Brass section

A.-All the instruments in the woodwind section are played with “ wind”
(the musician blows into them), . For the most part they look like sticks,
though some are longer than others, but they have very different shapes.

Woodwinds vary in how they are played. The flute and piccolo have a
hole that the musician blows across. This wind vibrates through the flute
creating a sound. The other instruments in this section use a reed. A reed
is a narrow strip of cane that vibrates when a player blows on it, creating
sound.
Blowhole: Flute, piccolo
Single-reed: clarinet, bass clarinet and saxophone
Double –reed: oboe, bassoon,contrabassoon
Not all woodwinds are made of wood. They can be made of metal, ivory
and even bone.
Many of these instruments are played using a system of keys or the
fingertips that open or close the holes.
They have a bell or sound outlet pavillon that is quite small, producing a
sound that is pleasing, softer and sweeter

B.- Brass section

The instruments in the brass section are usually made of metal, often
brass.
In this instrument the mouthpiece does not have a reed or bevelievd
aperture , as in the woodwindfamily. They have a cupshaped
mouthpiece made of metal.
The musician who plays brass must use his or her lips, instead of the
reed, to make the vibrations that make the sound.
Brass instruments are really just long metal tubes that flare at one end.
This instruments are operated by a system of valves, or pistons.

This family includes : the trumpet, French horn, trombone and tuba

Percussion family:

Depending on the type of sound they produce, they can be classified

into two groups:
Percussion instruments of definitive or determinate pitch: These are the
instruments that produce sounds of a specific pitch . They have specific
notes that can be written on a staff. Among these we find the following:
Timpani, xylophone, glockenspiel, tubular bells, celeste, , and
vibraphone

Percussion instruments of indefinitive or indeterminate pitch: these are

the instruments that cannot produce sounds of a specific pitch , such as:
Drums, gongs ,triangles ,Chinese box, maracas, guiro, castanets,
finger-cymbals, cymbals, sleigh bells
