Functions Finding Zeros Notes

The document discusses finding zeros of functions algebraically and graphically. It provides examples of finding the value of x that satisfies a given function, finding the zero of a function by setting it equal to 0 and solving, and interpreting the zero of a function as the x-intercept when graphed.

Functions Notes – Finding Zeros Name ____________________

Algebra 1 Date ____________ Block ___

We have already learned how to evaluate a function for a given x value:

a. What is the value of the function f(x) = 2x – 1 when x = -3?

b. Given the function f(x) = x2 + x – 1, find f(-2).

Remember, we can also find the x-value that gives us a certain value of the function:

For the function f(x) = 2x – 10, find the value of x so that f(x) = 6.

Original function f(x) = 2x - 10

Substitute 6 for f(x) ____ = 2x - 10

Solve for x

Your Turn
Find the value of x so the function has the given value:
1. f(x) = -x + 5; 7 2. g(x) = 7x - 24; 18

3. What value of x makes f(x) = 7 if f(x) = -3x + 20?

Finding Zeros of Functions
A ZERO of a function is the x-value at which a function’s value (y) will be equal to zero.

**A zero is also known as: a root, a solution and an x-intercept.**

We can find zeros both algebraically and graphically.

Algebraically Graphically
let f(x) = 0 and solve for x graph like an equation
and find the x-intercept

Find the zero of the function f(x) = 2x + 4.

Algebraically Graphically

f(x) = 2x + 4 f(x) = 2x + 4

0 = 2x + 4 let f(x) = 0 y = 2x + 4 remember: f(x) = y

solve for x

Look for the x-intercept

(the x-value of the point where
the line crosses the x-axis)

Your Turn
Find the zero of the following functions both algebraically and graphically.
1
1. f(x) = -3x + 6 2. f(x) = 2x – 4 3. f(x) = - x + 2
2
More on Zeros
1. You purchase a car for $27,000. The car depreciates (loses value) at a rate of $2,250
every year you own the car. When will the car be worth zero dollars? Use the following
function (x represents the number of years you own the car):

f(x) = -2250x + 27000

2. Steve is training to run a marathon and needs to run a total of 250 training miles. If Steve
runs 10 miles per day, how many days will he need to complete his training? Use the
following function (x represents the number of days of training).

f(x) = 250 – 10x
