Title of the Course: IDE 4020 Advanced Translation Skills

I. Aim and Contents: The aim of this course is to enable the student to gain
Turkish-English and English-Turkish translation skills, through the translation
of literary works, official documents, articles, and etc.
II. Course Outline:
Week 1 : General Introduction to the course.
Week 2 : Translation Theories
Week 3-4 : Sample texts in relation to the theories discussed
Week 5 : Methods of literary translation
Week 6-7 : Translation of sample texts
Week 8: Mid-Term Exam
Week 9-10 : Novel Translation
Week 11-12 : Drama Translation
Week 13-14: Poetry Translation
III. Textbooks: There is no set textbook for this course. The instructor will be
providing the translation text materials each week. However, students
themselves are responsible for obtaining the assigned course material before
coming to the class.

IV. Method of Instruction: The course is going to be mostly student centred. The
course will consist of lectures, in-class translation workshops, evaluation of
home assignments, discussions on different approaches to translation as a
practice, and discussion of word choices regarding in-class, or previously
assigned student translations.

V. Requirements: Students are expected to attend the classes having translated


and read the assigned material. They are also expected to take an active part in
class by joining in discussions and translation activities.

VI. Attendance: Attendance to the course sessions is compulsory.

VII. Assessment: There will be one mid-term exam, in-class activities, workshops,
short homeworks, quizzes and a final exam. Class work, assignments and
research tasks will be all marked. In the grading of the examinations and
assignments, up to 25% of the total mark will be taken off for grammatical
mistakes. The assessment will be made on the following basis:
Mid-Term 40%

In-Class Workshops, Class Participation and Home Assignments: %20
Final Exam 40%

IX. Plagiarism and Cheating:


Academic dishonesty of any kind such as plagiarism, cheating on exams and
assignments, turning in work that is translated/written by someone else, and helping
another student commit an act of academic dishonesty will not be tolerated. It will
certainly result in a straight failure and legal action will immediately be initiated.
