on 31st May there was an accident at sea close to the Galle harbour, where,

two ships went down. The smaller ship 'White Rose' had been going from

Colombo to Singapore. The other the 'Lady of Spa' had been on its way to

Colombo from Melbourne. The 'White Rose' has been carrying a consignment

of crepe rubber and finished garments to Singapore. The bigger ship had been

bringing a load of milk foods and electrical equipment from Australia. It has been

reported that a group of passengers too have been travelling in this ship. Both ships

had been travelling slowly and showing the usual lights. Before they went down a third

ship took all the passengers and the crew off and later brought them to Colombo.
