Branches of Mathematics
Algebra

A broad field of mathematics,

algebra deals with solving generic
algebraic expressions and
manipulating them to arrive at
results.
Geometry

Geometry is the branch that deals with the

shape, sizes, and volumes of figures.
Trigonometry
Trigonometry is a branch of
mathematics that explores the
relationships between the lengths
of triangle sides and angles.
Calculus
Calculus is the study of
how things change.
Engineering Statistics

Combination of engineering and

statistics meant for analyzing
data with the help of scientific
methods.
Graphical Analysis
Graphical depiction of data using charts,
figures, and graphs.
Application in
Daily Activities
Daily example - Algebra

Day to day activities require algebra, every

time you add, subtract, multiply or divide.
Daily example - Geometry
A use of geometry is how artists use the concepts to
design the best paintings and express their ideas.

The use of colours, brushes, and different strokes give

birth to excellent artwork.
Daily example - Trigonometry
Trigonometry is used by computers to process
sounds which then engineers can interpret to
produce music
Daily example - Calculus
Used to analyze population changes of the food
chain in biology, also growth rate of bacteria with
variables such as temperature.
Daily example - Engineering Statistics

Affects individual’s financial planning and organization’s

financial policy decision. Banks use statistics to lower
lending risk and predict economic changes.
Daily example - Graphical Analysis
In networking, used to measure and predict traffics.
Graphs easily collect data for performance evaluation of
numerous kinds of jobs to know why and how
something fail or succeed.
Case Study and Problem Solving
A fuel tank company requests us to design a fuel tank to store diesel fuel.

The fuel tank has to contain 300 litres of diesel fuel. The shape of the tank is a cylinder
with two hemispheres as the edges.

The lateral surface of cylinder costs $0.1 per cm squared while the rounded edges cost
$0.3 per cm squared.

As engineers, we have to determine:

What is the radius of the tank which will minimize the cost of manufacturing?

Case Study and Problem Solving

Using the branches of mathematics including algebra, geometry, and calculus, we

found the solution that a radius of 27.71 cm will be the optimal radius for the
minimal cost of the fuel tank.
