1). A cylindrical rod of steel ( E=207GPa, 30X10 psi) having a yield strength of 310 MPa (45,000 psi) is to
be subjected to a load of 11,100 N (2500 lb ). If the length of the rod is 500 mm (20.0 in.), what must
be the diameter to allow an elongation of 0.38 mm (0.015 in.)?
2) For a brass alloy, the stress at which plastic deformation begins is 345 MPa (50,000 psi), and the modulus
of elasticity is 103 GPa( 15X106psi).
(a) What is the maximum load that may be applied to a specimen with a cross-sectional area of 130
mm2 (0.2 in2) without plastic deformation?
(b) If the original specimen length is 76 mm (3.0 in.), what is the maximum length to which it may be
stretched without causing plastic deformation?
3) A composite rod is 1000 mm long, its two ends are 40 mm2 and 30 mm2 in area and length are 300 mm
and 200 mm respectively. The middle portion of the rod is 20 mm2 in area and 500 mm long. If the rod is
subjected to an axial tensile load of 1000 N, find its total elongation. (E = 200 GPa).
4) A rod ABCD made of three different cross-sections of the same material is under the influence of three axial loads

and temperature increase of 30 °C. If the material has coefficient of linear expansion =15*10 /°C, and other
characters tics below, calculate
a) Total change in length for the rod
b) The axial stresses at sections x-x and y-y.
Use: A1=600 mm², E =200Gpa,

A2 =1200 mm² =15*10 /°c,

5) A steel tube having an external diameter of 36 mm and an internal diameter of 30 mm has a brass rod of
20 mm diameter inside it, the two materials being joined rigidly at their ends when the ambient temperature
is 18 0C. Determine the stresses in the two materials: (a) when the temperature is raised to 68 0C (b)
when a compressive load of 20 kN is applied at the increased temperature.
For brass: Modulus of elasticity = 80 GN/m2; Coefficient of expansion = 17 x 10 -6 /0C
For steel: Modulus of elasticity = 210 GN/m2; Coefficient of expansion = 11 x 10 -6 /0C

6) A rod ABCD made of three different cross-sections of the same material is under the influence of axial
load P=50kN and temperature increase of 30 °C. If the material has coefficient of linear expansion

a) The support reactions at A and D
b) The axial stresses at sections x-x and y-y. Use: A1=600 mm² , E =200Gpa,

7 Find extension of tapering circular bar under axial pull for the following data: d1 = 20mm, d2 = 40mm, L
= 600mm, E = 200GPa. P = 40kN
8. Draw the shear force and bending moment diagrams for the loading condition on the beam shown
below, and determine the maximum shear force and bending moment. (The 10kN force is applied at
the centroid of the cross-section.)
9) Draw SFD and BMD for the single side overhanging beam subjected to loading as shown below. Determine
the absolute maximum bending moment and shear forces and mark them on SFD and BMD. Also locate points
of contra flexure if any.,

10) Draw shear force and bending moment diagrams [SFD and BMD] for the following Cantilever beam.
11) Draw the shear force and bending moment diagrams for the beam subjected to the loading shown. Find the
maximum bending moment.
