The GSM shield by Arduino is used to send/ receive

messages and make/receive calls just like a mobile phone by
using a SIM card by a network provider. We can do this by
plugging the GSM shield into the Arduino board and then
plugging in a SIM card from an operator that offers GPRS
coverage.

This GSM Modem can work with any GSM network

operator SIM card just like a mobile phone with its own
unique phone number. Advantage of using this modem will
be that its RS232 port can be used to communicate and
develop embedded applications. Applications like SMS
Control, data transfer, remote control and logging can be
developed easily using this. It Supports features like Voice,
SMS, Data/Fax, GPRS and integrated TCP/IP stack. To be
connected to a cellular network, the shield requires a SIM
card provided by a network provider. Figure 4.3 shows the

This is an Electrical resistance Sensor. The sensor is made

up of two electrodes. This soil moisture sensor reads the
moisture content around it. A current is passed across the
electrodes through the soil and the resistance to the current
in the soil determines the soil moisture. If the soil has more
water resistance will be low and thus more current will pass
through. On the other hand when the soil moisture is low the
sensor module outputs a high level of resistance. This sensor
has both digital and analogue outputs. Digital output is
simple to use but is not as accurate as the analogue output.

Software tool:
The Arduino software is used for the development and
implementation of the entire system proposed in this report.
Arduino is an open-source prototyping platform based on
easy-to-use hardware and software. Arduino boards are able
to read inputs - light on a sensor, a finger on a button, or a
Twitter message - and turn it into an output - activating a
motor, turning on an LED, publishing something online.
You can tell your board what to do by sending a set of
instructions to the microcontroller on the board. To do so
you use the Arduino programming language (based on
Wiring), and the Arduino Software (IDE), based on Figure: 11.snapshot of SMS sent when “dry waste” is

FUTURE SCOPE
1. Servers can be maintained at the WMC‟s to collect the
information from the dustbin instead of a phone number.
2. Each level of the dustbin can be recorded instead of just
recording the filled level.
3. Whenever a dustbin is filled, a GPS locator can be used to
locate another dustbin which is nearer to the user to make
the waste disposal convenient to prevent the waste lying on
the open streets.
