1. (a) There are a number of survey tasks that must be carried out in association with the
construction of a new building. Some of the reasons include (there are many others) :

* Compliance with design


* Legal requirements
* Interfacing with existing features

Describe four common survey tasks required as part of the planning and construction
process.
(20 marks)

(b) What is a total station and what type of measurements is it able to provide?
(5 marks)

(c) Describe the role of a project or site grid as it used during the building process.
(5 marks)

2. (a) Describe the three types of error that can influence any measurement process.
(5 marks)

(b) Give an example of each error type described in Question 2(a) which can affect the
measurement of distance using a stylon tape.
(5 marks)

(c) Surveying techniques are used to both determine the location of existing features on a
site (mapping) and to establish the position of new features (setting out). Describe
each of these tasks and illustrate by giving appropriate examples in a construction
context.
(5 marks)

(d) The distance-distance intersection method can be used to measure the locations of
existing features on a proposed building site. Can the results of such a survey be used
to determine the cadastral boundaries? Provide a full explanation of your answer.
(5 marks)

(e) Explain the role of the cadastral surveyor in the property development and building
construction process.
(5 marks)

(f) Describe the basic principles of operation of a laser scanner.

3. (a) Provide complete definitions for the following :

(b) A surveyor decides to conduct a two-peg test on a level before doing some set-out
work on a building site. What will this test achieve?
(5 marks)

(c) The results of the two-peg test mentioned in Question 3(b) are shown below, but the
surveyor has forgotten what to do next and so comes to you for help. Perform the
necessary calculations and provide an interpretation of the results.

4. (a) Briefly describe the three segments of the Global Positioning System.
(10 marks)

(b) Explain how a hand-held GPS receiver calculates its position from data received from
the satellites.
(10 marks)

(c) Surveyors involved in the construction of high-rise buildings use penetration holes to
transfer horizontal and vertical control information as the building height increases.
Explain how these holes are used and describe the instrumentation that is used in the
process.
(10 marks)

5. (a) Both raster and vector models can be used to represent real world data. Explain the
way each GIS data model could best represent land use information. Detail the type of
attribute(s) you would store and the corresponding “level of measurement”.
(20 marks)

(b) Briefly (1-2 sentences) explain the following GIS terms. Relate them to the land use
example above where possible.

(ii) Neighbourhood operations
(iii) Metadata
