RESEARCH PROPOSAL - PRESENTATION AND FORMAT GUIDELINES

BOARD OF ADVANCED STUDIES AND RESEARCH

RESEARCH PROPOSAL TEMPLATE FOR M.Sc/MS THESIS
University of Engineering and Technology, Peshawar, Pakistan

Congratulations on fulfilling your requirements for the application of your research proposal.
This phase should be completed in a timely manner to ensure that you can get on with your
research and thesis writing. The research proposal is your opportunity to plan your research
and present this plan to your department’s Project Research Evaluation Committee (PREC)
members, to convince the PREC members and the university that the research has merit and
should be supported.
In order to have clear understanding of your research proposal it is essential that the proposal
be written in plain language, brief, defining technical terms and not assuming any prior
knowledge of the research committee. The proposal will proceed to the Board of Advanced
Studies and Research (BOASAR) for consideration and approval. Sometimes revisions will
be requested before the proposal can be finally approved. Do not be discouraged by this.
Critical peer review is a normal part of the academic process and does not imply that you do
not have the ability or your research will not be successful. It is simply a way of ensuring that
the foundations for your research are as sound and strong as possible. Comments received
from the committee needs to be reflected in amendments or redrafting as agreed with them.

We aim to ensure that you complete your thesis with the minimum of amendments and the
most positive assessment by examiners. Approval of your research proposal is the first step
on the journey to achieving an excellent outcome from your research leading towards the
award of degree in the relevant field.

The Appropriate Length of a Research Proposal

A good research proposal is as long as it takes, but a guide would be 1500‐2500 words.
Remember that it is meant to be an accurate overview, not a thesis, so you need to provide
enough detail for the reader to understand it. Follow 3C’s rule (i.e. Clear, Concise and
Coherent).

Finally, remember that a research proposal instantly reflects your potential competence to
undertake graduate studies effectively. A proposal is ultimately about your ability to
demonstrate that you are capable of M.Sc/MS study, so you should put time and effort into it.

1. Summary
Write a brief summary/abstract of your research proposal listing the background, problem
statement, objectives, project plan and expected outcomes. The summary should be
maximum two paragraphs and 300-400 words long.

2. Introduction
Should be brief and to the point introduction of the research area. Give a brief contextual
background to your study. Set the stage for your study. Briefly tell us why this study should
be done. Use the proper referencing techniques preferably using EndNote or any other
available referencing software. In the introduction, you should use evidence (facts, figures,
and works by other authors) to convince us that your chosen research topic is:
Relevant
Not already over-researched
Feasible (in terms of scope, resources and a time frame))

3. The Problem Statement

Clearly state the problem, arising from your background given above, which you have to
solve in the proposed research. The problem statement is a concise description of the research
question that needs to be addressed. The research problem is your compass for the rest of the
steps to follow.

4. Aim and Objectives

Aims and objectives are the foundation on which the entire project is constructed, so they
need to be sturdy and durable. No paragraphs are generally required. Write aims and
objectives using brief and crisp bullet (or numbered) statements. Make sure to include how
the proposed research will be validated.

5. Scope/Significance of the study

Explain the benefits of the research in terms of novel contribution to the repository of
knowledge that can be disseminated to the academic community and more broadly to address
an important problem and its possible solution for a particular section of the community, such
as industry. Answer the following questions: Why is this study being undertaken? What is
the possible contribution of this study: scientific, policy, a program, practical contribution?

6. Literature Review
The eyes are an essential tool for human observation and perception of the world, helping
people to perform their tasks. Visual impairment causes many inconveniences in the lives of
visually impaired people. They cannot see anything, including light. They face many
difficulties when they are outdoors. They cannot see oncoming traffic or changes in traffic
lights when they go out and cannot avoid obstacles on the road in time. If impaired people
want to achieve better personal development through education, they need to make great
efforts to learn braille and master reading and writing. In addition to daily life,
visually impaired people in Pakistan are often at a loss when accessing necessary medical
treatment. They rely on their sense of touch and hearing and aid to maintain a normal life.
Therefore, it is necessary to focus on the needs of the visually impaired community. Globally
there are at least 2.2 billion people who have vision impairment or blindness, which includes
both blindness by birth and later in their life. Researchers work from different angles to help
visually impaired people live normal lives. Mark Humayun spend 20 years, looking for a
solution to blindness. In 1998, the first successful retinal implant surgery was performed by
Dr. Mark Humayun and his team at the Doheny Eye Institute in California. The implant is
known as the Argus I. In 2013 Argus II, a more advanced version of the implant, received
approval for commercial use from the United States. The device helps the blind to return to
functional vision. However, the visual percept produced by retinal implants has very limiting
information. The bionic vision (artificial vision) produced by retinal implants is not
understandable for blind people. To make the bionic eye technology useful researchers did
different experiments, they increase the number of electrodes, and the results shows that
increasing the number of electrodes does not necessarily improve the Performance of retinal
implants. However, Over the past ten years, Artificial intelligence has been used to enhance
bionic vision. To make bionic eye technology useful, it may be beneficial to employ

computer vision algorithms as preprocessing methods rather than trying to restore "natural"
vision. Researchers have explored several deep learning techniques that is visual saliency,
monocular depth estimation and object segmentation, and a combination of these three
strategies for testing the performances of the algorithm they introduced a psycho-physically
validated computational model of bionic vision to generate realistic predictions of simulated
bionic vision (SBV). The previous studies provide the first side-by-side comparison of
several deep learning-based scene simplification strategies for bionic vision. Considering a
number of relevant implant configurations in combination with a psychophysically validated
model of SBV shows that object segmentation may better support improving bionic vision
than models based on visual saliency and monocular depth estimation. On the other hand, a
smart prosthesis that provides cues to the visually impaired, much like a computer vision
system talks to a self-driving car. One of the big technical challenges still lingering in
autonomous driving is giving vehicles ‘human’ sight. Sight is a vital part of detecting and
understanding everything from road signs and traffic conditions to avoiding pedestrians and
vehicle collisions. Self-driving cars are a step closer to reality with our computer vision
technology, helping them to 'see' and avoid hazards. Combining bionic eye technology with
self-driving cars could indeed hold significant potential benefits for blind individuals. This
concept could enhance mobility and independence for people with visual impairments,
allowing them to travel more freely and safely.

Please keep in mind that literature review is NOT a list of articles followed by a short
summary of what they are about

7. Research Methodology
In previous work I exploered video instance segmentation technique for improving bioinic
vision by using Mask R-CNN algorithm. I focused on two objects that is dome and person
and download SBV videos of various indoor and outdoor dome scenes. I trained Mask R-
CNN Algorithm on video frames then we have object masks, for scene simplification we
used color splash effect. This method converts everything in gray scale except for the object
mask areas. For better understanding of scene, we multiped the gray function with 0 to
change background in black except the object mask area However, we used pulse2percept an
open-source, Python-based framework for modeling the visual processing in retinal implant.

This software generates a simulation of the perceptual experience of individual prosthetic

users [] The preprocessed videos were then used as input to the pulse2percept simulator, the
simulator takes a downscaled version of the preprocessed frame, and interprets the grayscale
value of each pixel in a video frame as a current amplitude delivered to the simulated retinal
implant. Moreover, we simulated 32 × 32 electrodes arranged on a rectangular grid. These
sizes roughly correspond to existing and near-future retinal implants.
