Introduction to the Windows 7 OEM Preinstallation Kit

Introduction to the OEM Preinstallation Kit

This document is a transcript of the Windows® OEM Preinstallation Kit Demo videos. For the
original videos, see the Windows OEM Preinstallation Kit Training.
In this video, I’ll install the Windows OEM Preinstallation Kit, also known as the OPK, and show
you some of the tools and documentation that are available.
This is the installation menu for the OPK.
Two key items here are the OPK Setup option, which installs the OPK, and the Release Notes
option, which opens the readme document for the OPK.
The readme contains important known issues and workarounds for this release. Note that
updates to this readme are available on the OEM partner Center Web site. Links to the readme
updates are also embedded in the OPK readme. I’ll install the OPK now.
The computer that I installed the OPK on is what we call the Technician Computer. This is the
computer I'll use to customize my Windows deployment. On the Start menu, click All Programs
and then click Microsoft Windows OPK to see the available items.
After I’ve installed the OPK, I'll see that there are several items available: a command prompt,
Windows System Image Manager, which we will discuss in a later video, and a folder for
documentation. On the Start menu, click All Programs, click Microsoft Windows OPK, right-click
Deployment Tools Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator. A command
prompt window opens.
I will use the Deployment Tools command prompt to run tools installed with the OPK. This
command prompt is useful because it automatically adds the location of the OPK tools to my
PATH environment variable. This lets me run the tools from any directory within this command-
prompt window.
This is where I'll find the OPK documentation. On the Start menu, click All Programs, click
Microsoft Windows OPK, and then click Documentation. This folder contains links to the OPK
User’s Guide, Quick Start for System Builders, and other documents.
Open System Builder Quick Start Guide. If you are a System Builder who is new to deployment,
the System Builder Quick Start Guide helps you create your first automated deployment that
meets the minimum legal requirements.
In the OPK User’s Guide, expand the OEM Preinstallation Kit Scenarios node to see the
scenarios. The OPK User’s Guide is a valuable reference and can answer many deployment
questions. A good place to start is the scenario topics, which are new for Windows 7. These
describe different end-to-end deployment methods, which include low-volume, manual installation
and high-volume, highly automated installations. These scenarios will help me understand the
terminology, process, and considerations to make when planning my deployment.
There is a Send Feedback link at the bottom of every page. If you want to help us improve the
documentation, you can click this link to send us your feedback about a particular topic.
