Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen of the jury and colleagues, my name is
James Youna accompanied me is Ali el Hadi abdo ,Mounir rizkallah and
NajIb kamal
And were very excited to share our project on the Van de Graaff generator
with you today. We have worked hard to bring this project to life, especially
with the tormenting and long hours of failure but here we are now.
It all started with NajIb thinking Plexy doesn’t break but as you can see here
* points at tube* it clearly does
So what is this machine and what does it do?

Our objective with this project is to demonstrate the principles of
electrostatics in a visually compelling way.
We aim to show how charges accumulate on the generator's dome and how
they can be transferred to other objects.
A Van de Graaff generator can be defined as an electrostatic generator that
generates extremely high electric potentials by accumulating electric charge
on a hollow metal globe on top of an insulated column using a moving belt.
At low current levels, it generates direct current (DC) electricity at very high
voltages.

For our generator, we used basic materials such as
PVC pipes,
teflontape
a rubber belt,
Metal Bowls, and a
motor.
Plexy base to hold up the generator
We constructed the generator by first assembling the PVC frame, and
thenading feflon tape to the lower roller because teflon is lower on the tribal
electric series than rubber which will lead to electron transfer from the band
to the Teflon
It is crucial to identify the material being used in this project as any slight
change of the metals could result in a failed experiment

You might be wondering how this slightly complex machine works and if it even
does,so we’ll plug it in and show u exactly what happens
The full idea of the generator revolves around a phenomena called the triboelectric
effect : it's the process by which electrons are
transferred from one material to another as they touch or rub against each other
Mounir
when the rubber belt rubs across the bottom roller electrons are torn away from the
belt and stick to the surfac of the roller this is because the roller is made of material
such as teflon which is lower down on the tribal electric series over time this build
of electrons gives the roller a net negative charge meanwhile the belt having lost
electron acquires a net positivecharge the negatively charged roller repels
electrons in the metal brush which travel down the wire connecting the metal rod
making the rod negatively charged meanwhile the tips of the metal brush are left
with a net positive charge eventually this positive charge becomes large enough to
pull electrons out of the surrounding air molecules turning them into positively
charged ions as electrons continually flow from the air to the tip of he brush and
down the wire a cascade of positive ions rush towards the negatively charged
roller and stickto the rubber beltHow it works (at the top) these positive ions ride
the belt up to the top of the van de graaff generator where they reach the other
roller this time made from a material higher up in a tribal electric series such as
aluminium as the rubber belt rubs over the top roller electrons are transferred from
the roller to the belt neutralizing the positive ions a leaving the belt with no net
charge as it descends back down the column the top roller is left with a net positive
charge which attracts electrons in the other metal brush inducing a negative charge
in the tips once again air molecules are ionized but this time the free electrons
move towards the positively charged roller while the positive ions left flow
towards the metal brush where they gain electrons
as the brush loses electrons to the air more electrons arrive in from the metal
dome to replace them leaving the metal dome with a net positive charge distributed
across its outer surface as the dome continues to lose more and more electrons this
positive charge builds and builds until it finally discharges onto a nearby object

As we come to the end of our presentation, we realize how fun this practical work
really is. But without the proper methods and education behind these generators
and machines, or even anything in life, the physics behind all this is what really
matters. It's the understanding of the principles at play that truly empowers us to
innovate and create. Today, through our Van de Graaff generator project, we've not
only showcased a fascinating device but also highlighted the importance of
education and knowledge in unlocking its potential. Thank you for listening
