Mechanics of Materials

Homework Fall 2021

Problem 1

Given the following state of stress at a point in two dimensions:

a. Construct the 2-D Mohr’s circle showing the x-face, y-face
coordinates. Also, show the center and radius of Mohr’s circle.

b. Use Mohr’s circle to determine the principal stresses and their

associated angles and show all of these on your Mohr’s circle
construction. Draw properly the oriented stress element.
c. Use Mohr’s circle to determine the maximum and minimum shear
stresses and their corresponding angles, and show all of these on
your Mohr’s circle construction. Draw properly the oriented
stress element. 9 pts

Problem 2

For the cantilever beam and loading shown, determine:

a. The equation of the elastic curve for portion AB of the
beam, and find all constants of integration.
b. The slope at A.

Problem 3

a. Draw shear and bending moment diagrams and show

all calculations
b. Determine the maximum tensile and compressive
bending stresses in the T-beam
c. Compute and plot the shear stress profile at C
d. Determine the maximum the shear stress in the
entire T-beam
Problem 4

The working stresses for the wood beam are 10 MPa in bending and 1.4 MPa in shear.
Determine the largest allowable value for load intensity wο. 3m

Problem 5

A stepped shaft ABC consisting of two solid circular segments is subjected to torques T1 and T2
acting in opposite directions, as shown in the figure. d1 = 2.25 in., L1 = 30 in., d2 =1.75 in. and
length L2= 20 in. The material is steel with shear modulus G = 11×106 psi, and the torques are
T1 = 20,000 lb-in. and T2 = 8,000 lb-in.
a. Draw torque diagram
b. Determine the maximum shear stress in the shaft
c. Calculate the angle of twist C (in degrees)

Problem 6

The steel pipe AB has a 100-mm outer diameter and an 8-mm

wall thickness. Knowing that the tension in the cable is 40 kN,
determine the normal and shearing stresses at point H.
Problem 7

A segment of the crankshaft in a vehicle is represented as shown in the figure. The load P equals
1.0 kN, and the dimensions are b1=80 mm, b2 =120 mm, and b3= 40 mm. The diameter of the
upper shaft is d = 20 mm.
Determine the state of stress at points A and B located respectively on z0 axis and y0 axis.
