7
What is It

How do you find the Activity 1? Did you enjoy it? Did you get the correct
words in the crossword puzzle?

Below are the terms and components used and found in a computer.
Consequently, these terms are the words you have found in doing the first
activity.

Definition of Terms

Hardware – used to describe any of the physical components of a computer.

Software – used to represent computer programs that runs on a computer.

Computer – a machine utilized for a variety of purposes going from browsing

the web, composing reports, editing videos, making applications, playing
games, creating animation, and so forth.

In order for a computer to do its job, an Operating System should be installed.

Operating System (OS) – a software that permits a user to run different

applications on a computing device.

The specific OS that we will use in this module is the Microsoft Windows.

Microsoft Windows – or MS Windows/Windows,

is a gathering of a few exclusive graphical OS
families, which are all marketed by Microsoft.

8
Memory or Random Access Memory (RAM) –
a physical device fit for putting data briefly and is
utilized by operating system, programming, and
equipment.

Hard Disk (Hard Disk Drive/HDD) – an electro-

mechanical data storage device that utilizes
magnetism to store and recover digital
information.

Talking about Hard Disks as a storage device, you should also know the
definition of Data Storage Capacity.

Data Storage Capacity – refers to how much data can be saved in a storage
device.

Processor – or the Central Processing Unit

(CPU), is the unit which performs the majority of
the processing and calculations that run a
computer.

Video Card – or Graphics Card, a hardware

inside the computer that processes pictures,
video (Computer Hope, 2019), shows graphical
information with clearness, color, definition, and
general appearance.

Graphical information includes the Display Resolution.

Display Resolution – is the quantity of particular pixels in each measurement

that can be shown, usually quoted as width x height (Wikipedia, 2020). For
example, 1024 x 768, which means that the width is 1024 pixels and the height
is 768 pixels.

9
Computer Specification – are the technical information of the components
and capabilities of a hardware or software product.

Processor speed is measured in hertz (Hz).

The RAM is specified in bytes (B), as well as the Data Storage Capacity, and
the Video Card.

Now that the important terms were defined, the next topic is how to
determine the specification of a computer.

There are many ways of checking the specification of a computer in Windows.

Method 1 – Keyboard shortcut (Recommended)

Using the keyboard:
1. Press the “Windows” and the “Pause/Break” button
simultaneously. Key combination: Windows+Pause/Break.

Method 2 – Computer Properties

Windows 7/10

option (Windows 10).
2. Using the mouse, right-click “This PC” or “Computer” to open the context
menu and select the “Properties” option.

10
Windows 8
1. Press “Windows” button using the keyboard. This is the Start or
Home screen.

2. Type “S” on the keyboard and you’ll be directed to the search field.
Continue typing “system” in the search field.
3. Select the “System Information” option from the results.

11
The instructions in Methods 1 and 2 will display the “System” window where
you can find the following:
 OS and its version
 Processor
 Memory

In order for you to know the storage capacity of the Hard Disk, please
follow the instructions below.

Data Storage Capacity

1. Open Windows Explorer and click “Computer” or “This PC”.
2. On the right panel of the window, you can find the drives on “Hard Disk
Drives and Devices with Removable Storage” or “Devices and drives”.

12
3. Right-click on a drive then choose “Properties”.

4. In the “General” tab, you’ll see the following information:

a. Used Space
b. Free Space
c. Capacity

13
Video Card

To find out the video or graphics card on a computer:

1. Press “Windows+R” on the keyboard, type “dxdiag” on the text box, and
press “Enter”.

2. “DirectX Diagnostic Tool” window will appear. As you can notice, the
“System Information” can also be seen here. Click “Display” tab.
3. Information about the video card can be seen in the “Device” section, its
name and the approximate total memory.

14
What’s More

Activity 2: Know Your Computer
