AUTO-SHUTDOWN SCRIPT

FOR BLENDER

All encouragement is appreciated.
This PDF will serve both as a quickstart guide and thorough documentation of this addon. Before
we begin, however, I’m going to leave the following warning as my disclaimer:

This script has the power to shut down your system with little/no warning.
PLEASE remember to save your work. I am not responsible for any data lost as
a result of using this script.

Luckily, the auto-save setting seems to


be set by default in Blender. I suggest
ensuring it set if you plan to use this script
to prevent any loss of work in Blender:

However, this won’t save any work open in


other applications.

WITHOUT FURTHER ADO, LET’S BEGIN


QUICKSTART
1. INSTALLATION
This script is installed like any other
add-on. Save the .py somewhere
on your system, then click Install
from the Add-ons tab of your
Blender Preferences window (Edit >
Preferences).
Navigate to where you saved it and
click install.
Everything else should happen automatically, but
just in case, make sure this little box is ticked.
2. USAGE
Great! Luckily that’s as difficult as it gets.
Now look to the Output Properties tab of your Properties
(by default to the right edge of your screen)
It’s pretty self-explanatory but I’m going to go over each of
the buttons.
2.1. Select Render Finish Mode
Click this to summon a pop-up box. Within this box, you
will get the following options to control what happens
when your system finishes rendering:
- Shutdown
- Hibernate
- Restart
- Quit Blender
They’re all self-explanatory so I won’t insult your
intelligence. Select your choice then click ‘OK’ to set it.
See confirmation in the panel.
2.2. Activate auto-shutdown
The big red button, so to speak. BEFORE clicking this, make sure that you are ready to render
and have set your output file path (see the Output Panel, in the same tab as this script’s panel for
convenience).
New in version 2: The script now only looks for the last frame to be rendered rather than counting
how many frames have been rendered. This is more robust than before and it means that if you
do click activate before you’re fully ready, it’s far less likely to cause any problems (but I still don’t
suggest it.)
If you happen to be using this while re-rendering a small part of a larger animation, you must set
your last frame to the last frame to be rendered in this session, not the last frame of the animation.
Otherwise it’ll simply look for that frame instead, which may already exist (so, insta-shutdown!)

2.3. Cancel Shutdown


Stand down, soldier. Cancels the render finish check.
3. WHAT TO EXPECT | GENERAL ADVICE
Newly implemented in version 2: The script now simply
waits for the last frame to be rendered rather than counting
rendered frames. The new algorithm means it will also work if
you’re rendering straight to video.
If you chose any of the modes that require your PC to be
shut down, you may receive a system message telling you
your system will shut down in less than a minute (as per
my experience, anyway) but this may differ based on your
settings.
The idea behind this script is that your system has been left
unattended to render out a complex animation for a few
hours, though, so you may not see this. Soon after the popup,
your system will shutdown/restart/hibernate without any
further prompts.
Same goes for if you picked Quit Blender - Blender will just
close straight away once the script has detected a finished
render, without saving (unless it auto-saves.)
